Every Kpop fan has their favorite group, and for those who are really very familiar with Kpop, they even have favorite groups in each genre. Here’s a fun list of Top 10 Kpop groups based on popularity of recent performance.
1. Girls’ Generation. You expected them to be in this position, didn’t you? There is no other spot for these 9 girls but #1. They are very active in the scene with their solo endorsements, dramas, musicals and now an upcoming world tour. Kpop is definitely in a girls’ generation.
2. 2NE1 is comfortable and secure at number 2. With their expected world-class performances and much anticipated comebacks whether solo or as a group, these four women can surely dominate.
3. SISTAR is a KPop girl group in rapid ascent. With their sultry steps and dominant vocals, they are out there to make their solid mark in Kpop as well. They will be coming back soon with “Give It To Me”
4. KARA Definitely knows how to stay relevant. Way over and past the scandals that plagued them against their management company and moving on to better things and to become better artists, KARA remains to be a permanent face of Kpop for international fans.
5. f(x) has the competitive formula. Rising to the front of the Kpop girl group leadership status, f(x) has been attracting international attention, recently being featured in SXSW and also collaborating with Anna Kendrick’s video humor website ‘Funny or Die’
6. Miss A, following Wonder Girls’ footstep while making their own mark makes it ahead at the sixth spot. It surely does help that their music is catchy, and of course the fact that the “nation’s first love” is part of the team. Adding to that, the nation’s first love has power vocals.
7. Wonder Girls made the girl group idol phenomenon what it is, as they pushed the Hallyu wave overseas with “Nobody” from years ago. While out of the limelight due to solo pursuits, these girls are not yet nobodies. Need proof? Their single, “Tell Me” has recenltly been crowned the best Kpop idol track of all time. Well-deserved.
8. 4MINUTE quickly rose to the charts as they kept pushing the Kpop envelope making hot issues and making sure that Kpop fans will never have to ask them “What’s your name?”.
9. Brown Eyed Girls Compared to the average age of a typical girl group member, Brown Eyed Girls are more the big-sister girl idols. But they remain unfettered by negative comments, and has proven time and again that sexiness is not defined by consistently fierce performances, and not by age.
10. SECRET managed by TS Entertainment made it to the Top 10 due to their recent comeback. From being cute they transformed themselves to sexy goddesses and made a catchy impression.
Dressed in a white dress with flowing ruffles, 2NE1’s Sandara Park participated in a photoshoot with fashion magazine, Elle.
Looking so pure in the shoot, Sandara Park commented, “Usually fans aren’t surprised by any of my concepts, but I bet it’ll be more shocking than the half-shaved concept because today’s is so innocent.
Appearing like a bride, especially with her 100-carat diamond ring that she wore during the photoshoot, Sandara Park talked about Wonder Girls Sunye’s recent marriage, describing it as something that strangely stirred her heart.
“I personally have no relationship with her, but for some reason, I felt fidgety and nervous, and my heart felt really weird,” said the singer. “She looked very beautiful.”
On her own future endeavors, she replied that she wants to challenge herself in acting. “I want to leave as many images of myself while I’m still young.”
The full interview and pictorial will be released in the March issue.
I seriously cannot wait for 2NE1’s comeback! I can’t wait to see what 2NE1 has in store for us this time. I hope YG would release teasers soon! ^_^
Top girl groups 2NE1, Wonder Girls, and f(x) have each announced their respective June comebacks.
All three teams are the representative girl groups of the ‘Big 3′ agencies YG Entertainment, JYP Entertainment, and SM Entertainment. The three teams have claimed numerous #1 victories on various music programs with each new release, and their comebacks are expected to turn the K-Pop industry into a warzone.
The Wonder Girls were the ones to strike first among the three by releasing their new title song “Like This” along with the accompanying MV.
“Like This” is a song written and composed by JYP Entertainment founder J.Y. Park, and contains an easy and upbeat hip hop rhythm with repetitive lyrics that make it simple to sing along to. Fans are responding positively to the girls’ new mature appearance and the exciting new song.
“Like This” was released the same day as Big Bang‘s “Monster“, and it has been a close fight between the two to maintain the #1 spot on music charts. Wonder Girls’ subtracks have also ranked high on the charts, captivating the ears of fans everywhere. Furthermore, the “Like This” MV received over 1 million views on YouTube in just a single day. Because the girls have until now received attention for their fresh, catchy songs and infectious dances moves, anticipation is rising for their broadcast promotions. Wonder Girls will be officially kicking off their comeback activities with performances on various music programs this week.
f(x) will also be making their respective comeback.
SM Entertainment reported on June 5th, “f(x) will be releasing their new mini-album ‘Electric Shock‘ all over the world through Itunes and various music sites on June 10th.”
This is the first album to be released by f(x) in a year since the group became one of the hottest girl groups after earning #1 wins with “Hot Summer” and “Pinocchio” last summer.
With each new album release, f(x) has consistently been acknowledged for their experimental and unique musical style, and expectations for this new release continue to rise as each of the five girls are determined to display their individuality, fresh new music, and upgraded performances.
For five days starting on June 6th, f(x) will be releasing teaser images of each of the members via their official homepage and Facebook pages to reveal their new concept.
Finally, YG Entertainment has also announced 2NE1′s June comeback, but not a lot of information regarding their return has been reported.
Like f(x), this is 2NE1′s first release in a year after dropping “I Am The Best” last June.
2NE1 won the hearts and minds of their fans immediately after their K-Pop debut, and the girls are causing their fans to go wild with news of their comeback alone. In a recent poll, 2NE1′s comeback was voted as the one fans are most looking forward to, proving the girls’ influence.
YG Entertainment is choosing to remain silent on the form and concept of 2NE1′s new album, as well as the exact date of their return. All that’s known so far is that the girls have worked on this new album with their exclusive producer Teddy Park, and that they are deciding which track should be their title song.
2NE1′s exact comeback dates have not been reported, however, they are expected to drop their new album towards the middle of June, which means they will be directly competing head-on with Wonder Girls and f(x).
2NE1, f(x), Wonder Girls… the sound of their names alone cause fans hearts to flutter a mile a minute. All three teams have shown amazing musical development and transformation with each new album, and the industry is already excited to see how they will captivate their fans this time around.

Which girl group has the most fan club members?
Recently, a ranking of the most popular girl groups was conducted using the total numbers of fan café members according to Internet portal site “Daum.” The group which came out on top was none other than SM Entertainment’s Girls’ Generation. Girls’ Generation had a whopping number of 284,600 members in their official fan café.
Girls’ Generation and the Wonder Girls have been in polite competition all year. Thus it would come as no surprise to fans that second place was awarded to the Wonder Girls. The Wonder Girls have demonstrated, like Girls’ Generation, that they are one of the ultimate girl groups in South Korea with close to 100,000 members. It is particularly impressive since the Wonder Girls’ activities have been concentrated on the United States and China as of late.
Third place was crowned to the ladies of 2NE1. 2NE1 was similar to the Wonder Girls in the case that their fan café had 90,000 or so members. Considering the fact that 2NE1 debuted in late 2009 their fan base has grown close to 100,000 people in over the span of three short years. Compared to say Girls’ Generation and the Wonder Girls who made their debut back in 2007.
Next was f(x) who took fourth place with 60,500 fans, fifth belonged to KARA with 50,300 members, Brown Eyed Girls ranked in sixth place with a total of 40,200 fans. Both 4minute and miss A were tied for seventh place with 30,200 members.
Most noticeable among the top 10 were the youngest girl group A Pink. Even though A Pink has been around for just a little over a year the girls still were able to pull in impressive numbers for their fan café. The total members of A Pink’s café were close to 30,000. They were able to gather fans the fastest and thus deserve particular attention. A Pink’s recently released comeback album has led to an apparent rise in popularity.
T-ara was excluded from the fan café ranking due to an error. But under normal conditions fans can be assured that they would rank very high on the list. Lastly, After School rounded out the top ten ranking in at the tenth spot with 20,000 members.
Awww! This is nice to know! Even foreign men find our Goddess irresistible! I always thought that Dara’s beauty wouldn’t resonate much with the western part of the world but I am glad to be proven wrong. ^^
Dara, you are a goddess, an orient doll!

#2 SeoHyun of Girls’ Generation

Korea is currently in its girl idol group phase, but what is the reason for the boom in popularity?
The reasons behind the immense popularity of girl idol groups range from their simple concepts to their catchy songs, from their individual talents to their eye-catching performances. However, there seems to be one more interesting reason behind many female idols’ fame.
Osen recently pointed out that cute members of female groups tend to generate widespread interest and bump up a group’s popularity singlehandedly. Every member has their own individual role in the group, and every group has a member in charge of being the ‘cute’ one. In Korea, fans call this certain member “Kui-yo-mi (귀요미),” meaning “the girl with the cute image (귀여운 이미지를 가진 이).” This member is in charge of garnering fanboy love with her cute/lovable/girly charm, which will result in a bigger fanbase for the group. In this report, Osen identified four girl group members that fit this role.
Nowadays the general trend in the world of idol groups the different looking stars’ charm and appeal are gartering attention, exploring the baby-faced people and young-looking stars who are the objects of envy while mature-looking stars capture fans with the charm of looking more mature than their actual age.
In the world of the best artists the group M4 was formed between friends of the same age, born in the year 1972. Netizens were shocked that singer Kim Won Jun and Bae Kisung from the group were of the same age. Unable to guess the stars’ age like those in the group M4, surprising baby-faced stars and mature-looking stars can be distinguished.
– Sandara Park vs Ye Eun
Though year ’84-born Sandara Park is five years older than ’89-born Ye Eun, she looks younger.
Girl group 2NE1’s member Sandara Park, her age being in the latter half of the twenties, is an officially recognized baby-faced star with unbelievably smooth skin and wrinkle-free face. Her face, giving off an innocent charm, mixed with the hip hop group’s unique force, radiate a distinct charm.
On the other hand, the yet-to-have a comeback girl group, the Wonder Girls’ Ye Eun’s charm is a ‘mature beauty.’ Though she debuted at a young age, her sophisticated actions and her getting older amplify her charm.
Meanwhile as the Wonder Girls indicated the release of their fourth album May 16th and upcoming activities in Korea, and 2NE1 who announced their upcoming summer comeback, we will have to wait for the war for the ‘true girl group.’ The battle between each group’s members, Sandara Park and Ye Eun’s charms, has been gartering a lot of interest.
