Why Everyone Should Be Listening To The Badass Ladies Of 2NE1

61acac94tw1eejuif2mqbj21kw2b2qlc

Fact: South Korean pop music has infiltrated American pop culture. After Psy‘s through-the-roof hit “Gangnam Style,” more and more K-pop artists and groups have crossed the Pacific and made their marks stateside. Girl group f(x) “welcomed” Anna Kendrick as as their newest member, Big Bang took over Brooklyn for two music videos, and there’s an entire section in Billboard dedicated to the K-pop scene. But, in an industry where the number of girl groups rival the number of instances in which Lady Gaga has made us go, well, gaga, it feels like all the ladies look and sound the same after a while. Perfectly executed singing and choreography with booty shorts, a cute-yet-sexy vibe, and a whole lotta hair flipping — it’s like they’re robots. Well, not 2NE1.

This four-member group is all about being badasses — and the more extreme, the better. Made up of Park Bom, Lee Chaerin (known as CL), Gong Minji (Minzy), and Sandara Park (Dara), the ladies produce some of the catchiest songs and most visually arresting music videos in the industry. If you don’t believe me, maybe this will convince you: The group’s second album, Crush, scored a #10 spot on the American iTunes chart when it debuted in late February, and the music video for the single “Come Back Home” has nearly 7.5 million views on YouTube. Not too shabby, eh?

So, what sets 2NE1 apart from the rest of the girl groups in the biz? Their ability mix multiple genres like hip-hop and dance with pop to create seriously catchy tunes, a fearless sense of fashion, and championing of girl power without any frills or sugar-coating. The quad prefers singing about being the best in the game over lost love (okay, there is a bit of that in their discography), kickin’ it on stage in Jeremy Scott’s wing sneakers over platform stilettos, sporting electric blue hair over blonde strands, and rocking grills over cutesy winks. Yes, there’s a good dose of sexiness in the mix, but it’s done with such an edge that you don’t realize it until you’ve watched the music video twice — which you will, trust me.

Even though I’ve no idea what 2NE1 is singing about, I can still appreciate the infectious beats, fashion porn, and general badass, IDGAF attitude that the group embodies. Keep doing your thing, 2NE1, and don’t stop the music.

Article: KpopStar – “There’s No Group Like 2NE1”

There’s No Group Like 2NE1

1512420_634104239972107_1552783452_n

2NE1 sure knows how to enjoy their time on stage every single time. Whenever they perform it’s like a festival. They said, “Now we’re really ready to play.” The group recently released their new album Crush, and they said themselves that it’s “like their 1st album.”

Our thirst for a full length album has been resolved. We’ve become accustomed to staying busy, we want to show you more on stage, and we’ve been wanting to sing new songs. But we couldn’t, and that was frustrating. We held our first world tour for 2 years, but unfortunately we didn’t have new songs to sing.”

This album was even more special for CL. For the first time ever she participated as a songwriter and composer, and thanks to Yang Hyun Suk‘s special attention, the album was released on the talented singer’s birthday. At most she started composing the song 2-3 months ago, and she’s been praised by everyone for the completeness of the music.

While making this album, and while we were recording the songs I made, our members have developed a closeness. Although my role is large right now, the other members’ roles can be larger in other songs. Each and every one of our members is very important. That’s what I realized while working on this album.”

2NE1 went head to head against popular girl group Girls’ Generation. Girls’ Generation had announced their comeback first. Girls’ Generation were scheduled to release their new mini album title song “Mr.Mr” on the 18th, and were supposed to hold their first comeback stage on Mnet’s “M Countdown” on the 20th. The entire album was supposed to be released on the 24th. 2NE1‘s full album release and comeback was scheduled for the same day on the 24th.

However, SM had to suddenly delay their comeback. This was due to Girls’ Generation’s “Mr.Mr” music video data being corrupted. They revealed that they would be announcing a new comeback date because of their damaged music video. YG used the strategy of delaying their album release date as well. YG revealed that they would be releasing the comeback on the 26th for CL‘s birthday, who created 3 of the songs.

But suddenly Girls’ Generation decided to release their full album on the 24th, and 2NE1‘s album released followed thereafter. The two groups were receiving a lot of attention even before their album releases. They both raised expectations with their similarly timed comebacks.

“Our tour was scheduled for March 2nd and 3rd. We didn’t feel very good about not having any new songs for our first tour. Since it was our first world tour we did it happily and worked really hard, but we were eager to hold a world tour after a new album release so that we could perform new songs onstage. That’s why we decided on a comeback date in late February.”

2NE1 overtook Girls’ Generation on music charts and rose to the top. Recently they also took home the number 1 trophy on a music program, and received praise for their unique color in the new album.

“I think it’s really great for girl groups to be active for a long time. In a way, it feels like 2NE1 has overcome a big mountain. Girls’ Generation has probably had very similar feelings. And it’s really admirable that they’re very active in other areas. We support woman power, so we hope for many other such groups.”

2NE1 was then asked, “But aren’t you falling behind in terms of romance?” and the members put on bemused expressions. “That’s true… We keep getting asked about our love lives because it’s White Day, but we really do fall behind,” CL answered, unable to hide her sorrow.

The members are at an age where they should be actively dating. When about to be asked whether they were limiting themselves or not being given the opportunity to do so, Bom said, “We don’t have the opportunity.” CL said, “It’s not too good to be close. There’s a lot of ‘You can’t do this,’ and there are lots of conservative opinions because we’re like little sisters. For the older members, it’s because they don’t go out. To be honest Dara deeply contemplated on the matter.” Dara said, “Yang Hyun Suk and other artists were more worried than I was. I should hurry up and relieve them of this worry,” and let out a big sigh.

“There’s no group like 2NE1. Nor will there be one in the future. We’re confident in that. We’re different in our personalities, our looks, our preferences, and in everything. Whether good or bad, we can’t confidently say that there’s never been another group like us.”

For the past 2 years while they were preparing for this album, 2NE1 members had to endure through a tough time. They didn’t know it at the time, but now that they’re looking back at that period, they feel as if they’ve overcome a huge mountain. Like CL said, 2NE1‘s confidence and passion for performing has grown.

And during that time the relationship between the members has grown much deeper, and all the hard times paid off in this new album. It was a time when they could have easily fallen. But the girls didn’t lean on one another, and instead won through with each member’s strong mentality. That’s why 2NE1 has come back stronger. Now that they’ve overcome such a difficult time, they’re ready for whatever else may come their way.

“We don’t know what that might be. Bumps come up in the road unexpectedly. We think we’ve overcome each situation very well, and we want to do so for a long, long time.”

Interview: 2NE1’s 4 Thrills… From Billboard to First Appearance on TV

2NE1’S 4 THRILLS… FROM BILLBOARD TO FIRST APPEARANCE ON TV (DIRECT INTERVIEW)

2NE1-빌보드부터-첫방까지..그녀들의-4가지-감격직격인터뷰

[스타뉴스 길혜성 기자] Girl group 2NE1 (CL, DARA, BOM, and MINZY) has finally disclosed the performance for their second full-length album “CRUSH” and kicked off performance for the new album in earnest. The four members expressed their feelings about four thrills that they have recently experienced in an interview with us.

2NE1 appeared on SBS channel’s live-broadcast music show “INKIGAYO” shot in the afternoon on the 9 at SBS Hall located in Deungchon-dong, Seoul. In the show, 2NE1 gave performance of two songs: “COME BACK HOME”, the title of their second full-length album, and “CRUSH”, which has the same title with the new album itself.

2NE1 disclosed all the songs in their new album on February 27 and released the offline album on the 7 this month, but their performance in “INKIGAYO” on the day was the first time to showcase the performance of their new songs in a TV music show. 2NE1 presented the stage of two new songs, with intense performances.

On the same day when 2NE1 kicked off their TV performance for their second full-length album, they met STARNEWS at the shooting of “INKIGAYO”, to talk about what they feel about the first TV appearance, as well as about four thrills they have been experiencing in relation with the new album, including their highest-ever record in Billboard Top 200 among Korean singers (or bands).

As 2NE1 has been super busy for preparations for their second world tour and first TV appearance ever since the release of the second album, they have hardly had an opportunity to talk about what they feel about the achievement of their new album. That is why we couldn’t wait to listen to what they say.

◆ Billboard Top 200… Highest-ever record among Korean singers=”Never imagined.”

2NE1’s second full-length album came in the 61st place in the latest Billboard 200 (Mar. 15) which is the main album chart of Billboard, America’s most-renowned album and music sales survey web-site. 2NE1 has not only put its name in the chart, but also recorded the highest-ever record on the chart among Korean singers. 2NE1 has also shown a big potential by taking the 2nd place in Billboard World Album Chart, which ranks albums released outside the country. So, what they feel about this feat?

“At first, the fact that our album ‘CRUSH’ came in the 61st place on Billboard 200 chart and that we set the highest-ever record for a Korean singer didn’t hit home. Frankly, we’ve never thought of Billboard. We had no such expectations. So, we were all the more surprised and happy. Haha. We worked so hard for the new album and our record on the Billboard chart felt like an unexpected reward for our hard-work. We will continue to live up to the expectations of not only Korean fans but also all the overseas fans, with better music and performances”.

◆ No.1 on music and album charts in and out of Korea=”Feels like our music created by all-nighter efforts are recognized.”

After disclosing all the music in their second full-length album at the end of February, 2NE1 has been sweeping the No.1 places on Korea’s top ten music charts and iTunes’ main album charts “Top Albums” in many countries with their double title “COME BACK HOME” and “GOTTA BE YOU”. 2NE1 themselves are more pleased by such a result than any other.

We have now taken the No.1 ranks in music and album charts in and out of Korea, but we were so much worried before the release of the album. Of course we release some singles last year, but the evaluation standard for a full-length album is quite different. Plus, we felt a bigger burden because it’s been so long since we released our first full-length album. However, our fans in and out of the country loved our new songs and album so much, so we could take the No.1s on music and album charts. We are so happy about that. We felt rewarded for our all-nighter efforts to create good music. We thank you once again”.

◆ YG’s head Yang Hyun Suk created the point dance for “COME BACK HOME” himself=”A big reassurance.”

Yang Hyun Suk, the CEO of 2NE1’s label YG Entertainment and the member of “Seotaiji and Boys”, the legendary idol boy group in the 1990’s, showed his passion for 2NE1’s music and performance, by choreographing the point dance for the title of 2NE1’s second full-length album “COME BACK HOME” himself. Yang created the choreography of Seotaiji and Boys’COME BACK HOME” in 1995 and now, he has created the dance once again, for the song with the same title with his past hit, 19 years later. This has been drawing much attention from music fans. 2NE1 themselves are very much satisfied with Yang’s point dance for “COME BACK HOME” and thankful to him.

“President Yang (Yang Hyun Suk) does a lot of things for the company. Now, he doesn’t even have a time to choreograph YG singer’s music as he did in the past. However, we asked for his advice for the point dance of ‘COME BACK HOME’ and he readily gave his idea. You know, he really cares about us. Haha. We were so happy that his idea satisfied not only us but also all our staff very much. Since we are armed with his point dance for ‘COME BACK HOME’, we feel so much reassured every time we stand on the stage. It was the same for our first TV performance. Thank you Mr.Yang. Haha”.

◆ First TV performance long awaited by fans and 2NE1 alike=”Exciting and fun.”

Before “INKIGAYO”, 2NE1 has shown their performance for the songs in the second full-length album only at the second world tour held on March 1 and 2 at Olympic Park’s SK Handball Hall in Seoul. That is why not only 2NE1 fans but also the members themselves looked forward to the first TV performance in “INKIGAYO” so much. 2NE1 has successfully finished their first TV performance with excitement and fun.

“It was so much exciting and fun to finally show the performance of the songs in our new album in four years to fans. We’ve been working hard on the performance for the new songs for a long time, and it was really happy and exciting to demonstrate the performance for the first time on TV. We were a little bit nervous because it was the first, but it was also very much fun. Starting from ‘INKIGAYO’, we’re going to show performances of more songs on the stage to fans. Since we have been working on the album for a long time, we put a lot of efforts not only in the songs themselves but also in the performances for them. Since we’ve been working hard, we’re confident about the performances to show you from now on”.

Meanwhile, about the coincidental overlapping of the release of their album with that of another globally-popular girl group Girls’ Generation, 2NE1 smiles and says, “We like it because we can support each other’s woman power and show it together”.
