Interview: Kstar10’s Interview with 2NE1 – New Evolution, Fashion, Music and Inspiration

2NE1: “‘I AM THE BEST’ on stage” (Pt. 1)

There used to be a time in the Korean history when having a job in singing and dancing was regarded as a shameful thing. But now that is something very hard to believe for younger generations here. Singers are adored and get praised for their god-given talents, and without a doubt, they are now the leaders of Korean culture and fashion; and that’s where 2NE1 stands.

2NE1, debuted in 2009, is a group of four transgressive young women artists pioneering new music styles and fashion. Going beyond synchronized dance routines and repetitive chorus, they were the first K-pop group to dominate local online music charts with five singles in a row: ““Don’t Cry,” “Lonely,” “I Am The Best,” “Hate You” and “Ugly.”

If you think the group’s international acclaim in a little over three years of their singing career is hard to believe, wait till you hear what is next: “NEW EVOLUTION.” (Note: The original article wrote “REVOLUTION”.)

In between releasing the new single and going for the theatrical run, 2NE1 told the magazine about their world tour, “NEW EVOLUTION,” and their new tune– a cross-genre song of electronic and trot music– at the YG Entertainment office building in Seoul on July 6.

People of your generation didn’t grow up listening to trot music [an old Korean pop music genre based on four beats and sad melody from Japanese ballad “enka’”]. Was it not difficult understanding and digesting the genre?

Minzy: My parents love trot music so it wasn’t new to me at all.

CL: Even if you don’t grow up being exposed to trot music, you know the feeling of it. It wasn’t so difficult imagining what kind of message trot music has inside (its lyrics and melody).

Sandara: My mom loves trot so I used to sing “The man in Shinsadong” (translated title) a lot.

CL: Minzy was good at singing the trot parts of our new song.

Screencap: Dara says, “I’ve already shaved the left side of my head 2 or 3 times”

Oh! What is this? Keke! Maybe it’s because her hair grows back too fast. ^^ Let’s all wait for the full interview on Monday!

(A/N: This is actually my problem too. As some of you might know, I, Gally the Snail, also had half of my hair shaved, just like Dara’s. And the hair grows back too fast! Keke. I guess I have to shave it multiple times too. ^^)

In the same interview, Dara said that it was CL who recommended her to have half of her head shaved for a change. She admitted that she got a little teary when she was shaving her hair, but she said that she likes it now. ^^ How cute is ChaeRa? <333

Naeil News Interview:

Reporter: Recently, in an interview with several reporters, 2NE1 members were asked what they felt at that time regarding the success of their songs.

Dara: With each song, I feel an increasing amount of pressure, but with all the songs already revealed and everyone’s support, I feel very good.

Reporter: 2NE1’s clothes and costumes is always fierce and unique during stage performances, that the public surely has misconceptions. What are the members thoughts on this?

Dara: Whenever we perform, our concepts for our bright costumes and hairstyles are explosive, so there’s a certain thought that they associate with us, but underneath it all, we are just woman who are performing. But sometimes, I feel embarrassed and uncomfortable at the thought of wearing a skirt.”

Asiae Interview:

Q: Starting on April, with the release of Park Bom’s “Don’t Cry,” you started releasing a new song every three weeks, and they’d all get first place in several music charts. How did you feel watching this even before the album was officially released?

Sandara Park: To be honest, although I felt a huge amount of pressure, as song as each song came out, it was still very enjoyable because each song had a different atmosphere. This time, I think our appearance would be more fun, because we enjoyed the time we had while preparing.

Q: When do you lose your self-confidence?

Sandara Park: It’s a bit unusual for me to dress up, because on-stage I always dress like a guy, and most of the time, I have unusual hairstyles on. So sometimes, when I wear feminine clothes, I strangely lose confidence.

Q: Sandara Park looks like a pretty boy with her hat and costume on the stage for “Ugly.” Earlier you said that you lose confidence instead when you wear feminine clothes, but still, is there a greed to someday try out a more feminine style?

Sandara Park: Strangely enough, I don’t think I feel that greed. In fact, I feel that if I chose a feminine concept on stage, my fans would be shocked! They’d be telling me all about it. It would be quite confusing for them. Ha ha! So right now, I’m not thinking of being more feminine.

Q: When do you think, were you the most feminine?

Sandara Park: I think it was the stage for “I Don’t Care” that I was the most feminine, then recently for the stage for “I Am The Best” when I wore silver bangs and a skirt. During those times I believe I was very feminine, but I don’t think the fans saw it that way.

Park Bom: But that wasn’t even very lady-like… (laughs)

Sandara Park: Oh wasn’t it? Ha ha ha!

Q: On the first season (of 2NE1 TV), you had a clear goal of making 2NE1 known to people, two years after your debut, what is in your mind while shooting this (season)?

Sandara Park: Although we have PDs following us, we take shots of each other now, so I think we’re more relaxed. In addition to our everyday lives, the episodes these days would show the process of preparing for “Ugly.” I hope that you watch this week’s broadcast. You need to watch the episode live. (laughs)

Q: Sandara Park is learning the guitar these days, have you already played the F chord successfully?

Sandara Park: I am on my way to being successful. Soon after, I want to play “I Don’t Care” first. But because of that chord, I can’t play it yet.

Q: When you debuted, President Yang Hyun Suk put you on a five year dating ban. Has he stopped it now?

Sandara Park: No, it would end on May next year, so we have little less than one year now.

Q: What do you think will happen next year? (laughs)

Sandara Park: Actually, even when we’re free, it would be hard to find a guy… It’s worrying.

Park Bom: I wouldn’t know about anything for certain until we’re fully free.

Q: 2NE1 has actually been gaining much attention, specially now with expanding into the Japanese market, plus working with Will.I.Am, thinking about this now, being part of 2NE1 for two years and two months already, what do you think of that time?

Sandara Park: I think it passed too fast. I already missed those times. The short time seems short, but at the same time it seems like it’s been a long time already, and as we work together, our desire to be together longer grows. Aigoo, I can’t do serious talks very well. (laughs)

Q. Last question. What do you do that makes you feel good?

Sandara Park: Whenever I go on stage, it seems easier to get that kind of feeling. Whenever I can hear fans cheering, it gives excitement to my body, and those three minutes are the best feeling that I could have.

Star News Interview:

– All of your new songs achieved number one for five consecutive “all-kills.”

▶ (Sandara Park) Evey song has a different atmosphere to it, so everyone has a song that would sound the best to them.

– In “I Am The Best,” it screamed confident, while the song “Ugly” has the opposite feel. When does 2NE1 lose some confidence, if ever there are times for that.

▶ (Sandara Park) Sometimes when I am dressed in feminine clothes, some of my confidence disappears. (laughs)

– After last year’s activities, it took some time after you announced that you will be coming back with new songs, so you surely had time to relax.

▶ (Sandara Park) During break, I took some vocal and dance lessons. I wanted to drive a lot, but I didn’t know a lot of roads, so I only drive on the riverside towards the north.

– How is the last two years after your debut.

▶ (Sandara Park) The last two years seem to have gone by so quickly. I will continue to work even harder.

My Daily Interview:

It’s been 2 yaers and 2 months since 2NE1 debuted. The members said that the time seemed so short and at the same time, so long. Their common answer was that they “hadn’t even noticed that time flew by that quickly.”

Sandara Park said, “Looking back on it now, it seemed to have gone by so fast. And I think I already missed that time,” she said, “For two years, we moved forward, step by step, together with all four members, and for a long time, I would want to stand on stage side by side in the future,” she said of the future.

It is quite apparent that there is no girlgroup today like 2NE1. Throughout the whole interview, they showed a confident atmosphere as they talked about themselves and music. Regardless of anywhere they are or what they are doing, they give say proudly that “I Am The Best’ because of their confidence.

Sandara Park shares, “Even for three minutes, whenever I hear the fans cheering when I am on stage, it gives you a strong feeling like you can say, “I Am The Best,” she said, shaking her body with her lively expression, eliciting laughter. CL and Minzy also gave similar answers. They say that whenever they find themselves on stage, they express themselves the best, “I Am The Best, especially whenever I am on stage,” they said.

Newsis Interview:

How to understand the group 2NE1.

Leader, CL (20, Lee Chae-Rin) says that the majority of the impressions made by people for them is that “they are boyish.” In fact, except for mini-skirt wearing main vocals, Park Bom (27), CL, Sandara Park (27), and Gong Minji (17) seem to give off an impression that they would never wear skirts or feminine clothes. Even Sandara Park, who is an endorser of a cosmetics brand, gives a strong impression like that of a young boy. CL however said, “We’re just like other women, and we’d like to try out something more feminine, but I don’t think a lot of our fans would like that,” she said, laughing.

Ever since their debut on May 2009, with digital single “Fire,” everything seemed to a smooth road for 2NE1. However, Sandara Park said, “Sometimes, it’s difficult for me to go up on the stage,” she confessed. Times when bad comments are made on Internet websites that she goes on, “My mindset is not good sometimes,” she said.

After 2 years and 2 months since their debut, 2NE1 would be having their solo concert in Korea, for three consecutive days, on the 26th, 27th, and 28th, at Olympic Hall, Olympic Park, Seoul.

Sandara Park said, “I think time has passed by so fast, I’m going to miss this,” she followed, “I want to show a better stage for the fans, and now that I have more time with the fans, I want to spend it with them wisely,” she said, revealing her ambitions.

Interview: 2NE1’s Interview With Cyworld for “I AM THE BEST”

What’s up! We’re 2NE1!

Hello~ All the members of Cyworld~!

2NE1 is back with exciting club tune, “I Am The Best.”

After a long time, we are finally back, we really appreciate your patience in waiting for us~^^

Please introduce your newest single “I Am The Best.”

CL: “I Am The Best” is a song by Teddy-oppa, who is one of YG’s producers. It’s very different from our previous song, “Lonely,” in that it shows a different color of 2NE1. From the title, you can already feel that it is provocative, and the lyrics are empowering, it’s a really exciting song that is quite similar to our debut single, “Fire.”

Dara: We also have the choreography that’s called “The Best Dance” ~ We practiced really hard for the dance, so our actions would come out better? I showed a bit of how I looked like during I Am The Best practice, so it’s a lot of fun~ Please give us a lot of expectations~!

You will be coming back after a long time, what are your plans for “I Am The Best” activities?

CL: It’s been a long time eve since we did broadcast activities, so we are looking forward to meeting everyone again through our single! Then in July, our mini-album would be released, then 2NE1’s solo concert on August 27 and 28!!! This summer, we really expect to be active.

It’s really going to be a hot summer with 2NE1! Show their new singles a lot of love and support~! Also, please stay tuned for their future activities!

Please tell us what 2NE1 song is the most meaningful to you.

[Dara’s Recommended Song] For me, it’s “Fire!” This is our debut song, and also, it’s more meaningful, I think, because through this song, we got to meet our fans for the first time

[Park Bom’s Recommended Song] It’s my solo that was revealed a while ago! It’s “Don’t Cry.” It showed me that I have a lot of fans, so everyone, thank you so much for giving me a lot of love!

[Minji’s Recommended Song] The one that received so much love ~ “I Don’t Care” it means a lot to me when people sing and follow us when we sing it because it shows that they love it too!

[CL’s Recommended Song] It’s been a while since we did any activities, so instead of recommending a past song, I’d go with “I Am The Best.” It’s been 9 months since we met the fans directly, so this would be quite meaningful!

As a singer, who is your role model? Please recommend their music also.

[Dara’s Role Model – Uhm Jung Hwa] Whether it’s on stage or work ethics or portraying a new look, my role model has always been Uhm Jung Hwa sunbae (T/N: Sunbae = senior). Whether she’s acting or singing, this rabbit never fails to feel excited and think highly of her, and I try to never miss out on anything new. I would like to recommend her collaboration with YG, the song, “D.I.S.C.O.”

[Parl Bom’s Role Model – Beyonce] On stage, she exudes such charisma and powerful vocals, and she always amazes the audience with her brilliant performances. I really think that she’s the perfect artist. From her new songs, I’d recomment her single, “The Best I Never Had.”

[Minji’s Role Model – Michael Jackson] Michael Jackson, do I need to say anything more? The name alone is already a legend, Michael Jackson will always be my rolemodel. My recommended song would be “Thriller.”

[CL’s Role Model – Madonna] She has her own phiosophy and originality, and she always looks passionately to try out something new, so I look up to her. For my recommended song, it’s “Celebration,” which is a collaboration between her and Akon.
