K-Pop idol group 2NE1 performed in front of 7,000 American fans during their first ever exclusive concert in the United States.
Yesterday, August 18, 2NE1 performed at the Newark Prudential Center in New Jersey for their “New Evolution” global tour. Previously, global stars like Lady Gaga, the Eagles, Sting and Bon Jovi have all performed at the venue and it still continues to be recognized as a concert location for top stars.
Although the concert began a little later than the original scheduled because of technical difficulties, the fans forgot about the delay as soon as the opening video for 2NE1 began to play.

2NE1 appeared on stage to open their concert with their internationally famous song “I Am the Best”, followed by “Fire”, “Clap Your Hands”, “I Don’t Care”, and “Don’t Stop the Music” to heat up the crowd in the audience.
Soon after, each member of 2NE1 showed up on stage individually to deliver their specially prepared performances. 2NE1’s leader, CL, transformed into a DJ and introduced various pop numbers and created a club-like atmosphere while Bom performed her solo song “You and I.” Dara also performed her solo song “Kiss” and showed off a provocative performance that excited the fans. Dara apparently chose a fan in the audience to come up to the stage during her performance. Minzy performed a powerful dance number that shocked the audience.

2NE1 performed a total of 23 songs in approximately 2 hours and successfully wrapped up their first “New Evolution” concert in the United States. After 2NE1 was announced as one of the best new bands in the world, this was their 2nd performance as well as their first exclusive concert ever in the United States. 2NE1 will perform at the LA Nokia Theater on August 24.
On August 22, 2NE1 will visit the head office of Facebook for a “Facebook Live” interview that will broadcast live worldwide. 2NE1 will be the first Asian group to be interviewed by Facebook.
After their concert in LA, 2NE1 will head to Japan to continue their “New Evolution” world tour on August 31.

2NE1, Korean-Pop Group, at Prudential Center in Newark

NEWARK — They waited patiently, several thousand of them, outside the Prudential Center here on Friday night. They were mostly young, a combination of futuristic cool and slightly awkward. The more extravagantly attired were beyond mere extravagance: shiny clothes in bold contrasting prints, hair dyed in colors known to no rainbow.
They were K-pop fans, here for the first American performance of 2NE1, the K-pop — that’s Korean pop — stars. And they were being made to wait, unhappily, for unspecified reasons well past the time that doors were supposed to open, then also past the time that 2NE1 (pronounced “twenty-one” or “to anyone”) had been meant to take the stage. There was at least one report of fangirl tears on the street before the arena’s doors finally relented, and the crowd clogging the sidewalks was slowly herded to seats, just dodging the rain that would have compromised those outfits.
The members of 2NE1 awaited them, taking the stage in track jackets with their names — CL, Dara, Minzy, Bom — spray-painted on the back and, for some of the band, their own faces airbrushed onto the front. (The clothes for the tour were by the fantasist designer Jeremy Scott.)
We’ve heard a lot about the Korean music acts trying to make it big in America. The latest comes from the last of that country’s big three entertainment companies and promises a “new evolution.” 2NE1 will start its quest in the New York area. NY1’s Lewis Dodley filed the following report.
Meet CL, Dara, Bom, and Minzy. The group 2NE1 burst onto the Asian music scene with the hit “Fire” in 2009 and have been red hot ever since. Now they’re headed to New York. But what sets them apart from the other Korean groups tryng to find success in the United States?
“I think it’s our music and our loving fans that give us energy on stage,” said 2NE1’s CL.
“I feel that with 2NE1 and with YG, which is the big record label that they’re under, they really want to distance themselves from K-pop,” said entertainment writer David Yi. “So when you talk to any YG artists, they tell you ‘oh, we’re not K-pop, that’s not our genre.’ They would say that they’re more hip-hop or more electronic music.”
2NE1 caught the attention of the Black Eyed Peas’ will.i.am. He’s been working with the group, fueling speculation that 2NE1 will have an English offering soon. Without confirming that, the girls told us in a pre-recorded video from Korea that America had better watch out.
“Yeah, we’re ready to see our fans from all around the world,” CL said. “We’re ready to have fun with our fans. I hope they’re ready.”
“2NE1 has this buzz around them because they kind of are the Lady Gaga/Nicki Minajes of South Korea,” Yi said. “They do have such sick style that even that alone has people going ‘oh my gosh, they are insane.'”
Of course, he means insanely talented. 2NE1 comes to the New York area for one stop in their global tour as they take the stage at Newark’s Prudential Center on August 17.
