Article: MTV STYLE – 2NE1 Take Headwear To New Heights On ‘FAULT’

2NE1 Take Headwear To New Heights On ‘FAULT’

It’s kind of impossible not to fall in love with 2NE1. Like, the moment we realized they alsoshare a serious obsession with Jeremy Scott and decked-out winged sneakers, we were ALL aboard this K-Pop train. Typically, the 4-piece girl group (which includes Dara, CL, Minzy and Bom) can be seen sporting larger-than-life technicolor onstage ensembles orkiller customized streetwear, but when we peeped them on the recently-released Dreams & Nightmares issue of FAULT Magazine, they totally transitioned over to the dark side. *cue spooky ghost sounds* All four ladies were clad in fancy, all-black ensembles paired with animal-inspired headgear that looked straight from the Viking era. And we’re not talking cutesy little horns here—we’re talking insane headpieces with spikes on them. Yeah. Spikes, people. On horns. The cover shoot, photographed by Giuliano Bekor and styled byAvo Yermagyan, shows a darker, goth-glam side of the girl group, which was used as a double cover with Kelly Osbourne’s goth glam shoot from a few weeks ago. OMG, our cold, black hearts can barely handle all this goth-y goodness.

Dara looked kooky-cute in her black and white striped tights, pleated skater dress, insane stacked heels, intricate antlers, and high-fashion hunch pose.

Article: FORBES – Bigger Than Psy: 2NE1 and the Future of K-Pop

Bigger Than Psy: 2NE1 and the Future of K-Pop

The event roster for the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, is fairly diverse. On any given night, the arena might play host to an American Idol concert, a hockey game or a death-metal mini-festival. But on August 17th, the main attraction was something unusual even for a bastion of bizarreness.

Just before bass started thumping, a projector illuminated the curtain with images of a diamond, a spade, a heart and a club, representing the four diminutive members of the musical act known as 2NE1. Pronounced “twenty-one,” as in blackjack’s magic number, the group—CL, Bom, Minzy and Dara—proceeded to stomp across the stage as a crowd of 10,000-plus rapped and sang along with them in Korean.

I think Korea right now is really passionate about music. I mean, everybody is, but we’re passionate about performing and we love music,” CL explained when the group stopped by FORBES’ New York headquarters a few days later. “So I think the world is feeling that right now, feeling the energy.”

The world certainly is feeling the energy of Korean pop music—better known as K-Pop—in general, and one need only look at Seoul rapper Psy’s viral “Gangnam Style” video for evidence. The clip has racked up over 475 million YouTube views in since its launch three months ago; Psy himself was recently signed to Schoolboy Records, the Universal Music Group imprint run by Scooter Braun, who also manages Justin Bieber, Carly Rae Jepsen and Asher Roth.

Though Psy has been getting all the publicity of late, his female counterparts in 2NE1 may actually be the bigger stars. Known by many as the Korean version of the Spice Girls, the group has sold 27 million digital downloads to date, including the single “I Am The Best,” which moved 4.5 million units and won Song of the Year honors at Asia’s Mnet Awards.

Before this song, people in other markets knew 2NE1 more than Psy,” says Danny Im, former member of the K-Pop group 1TYM. “2NE1 was way bigger. They were hitting No. 1 when Psy was on hiatus.”

2NE1 and Taeyang to Release New Songs in November

It seems Big Bang‘s Taeyang and the girls of 2NE1 will be returning to the music scene in November!

According to information revealed to ‘Star News’ by YG Entertainment‘s Yang Hyun Suk, Taeyang and 2NE1 are both set to release new projects next month.

“Although 2NE1 was originally scheduled to release a new album in October, due to their world tour, it is most likely at the moment that they will be releasing new material in November instead,” Yang Hyun Suk stated. “For the time being, we have scheduled for 2NE1 to record this month… You’ll be able to meet new songs overflowing with 2NE1′s unique style this coming November.”

On Taeyang’s solo comeback, he commented, “For Taeyang’s case, he was originally going to to release a solo album this past summer with G-Dragon and start promotions… He worked with American producers and had completed the new album. However, he, as well as I, were both not completely satisfied and thus decided not to release it at the time.”

“Taeyang is currently reworking on the solo album and may be able to release a new song as a single first in November… I’m a fan of Taeyang myself, so I am highly anticipating the stage for his new solo song,” he said, and wrapped up by adding, “In October, YG’s Epik High as well as Lee Hi (Lee Ha Yi) will also reveal new songs… As we’re also expecting 2NE1 and Taeyang promotions on top of all that, we are already looking forward to enjoying the end of the year with fans.”
