Article: The Japan Times Online: LISTENING POST – 2NE1 “Collection”

2NE1’s “Collection” was reviewed by The Japan Times Online. I love how they described Dara as “sassy with a touch of ironic self-awareness.” True, our Goddess is very sassy.

Unfortunately, I also agree that their closing cover of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” was a “pointless, deflating end to the album”. Other than the CM, I honestly found no use for their cover. And dare I say it, I actually found it *gasp* bad! T_T

What do you guys think of their review of 2NE1’s “Collection”?

LISTENING POST: 2NE1’S “COLLECTION”

With Korean idol groups now saturating the Japanese pop market to the extent that the initial breath of fresh air and rush of slick, electropop energy is passing, it takes a more seasoned kind of fan to differentiate between the legions of immaculately rehearsed Girls’ Generation clones. But with Japan slow to respond with forward-thinking pop of its own, the task falls to another Korean group to blow K-pop apart.

2NE1 have a habit of reminding the listener of the group’s name every three or four seconds during the first half of this first Japanese-language album, and like a Korean TLC composed of four Lisa “Left Eye” Lopezes, every moment buzzes with that most misused word in pop music — attitude. Main rapper CL’s spoken word intros are full of swagger, Park Bom is as fine a singer as they come, Dara is sassy with a touch of ironic self-awareness, and Minzy … well, she’s a good dancer.

In a way, 2NE1’s closest Japanese equivalent is probably idol group Momoiro Clover Z. While they come from radically different musical backgrounds, they share a seamless integration of personality, image and music, with each element mutually complementary. They also share a completely batty, everything-and-the-kitchen-sink approach to songwriting. “I Am the Best,” already familiar from last year on the “Nolza” mini-album, is a particularly striking example with its collision of manic house music bleeps, crunching electro synths, tribal drumming and Indian/Middle Eastern melodies sounding like absolutely nothing else on earth. What do you even call that music? Dutch electro-Bollyhouse? Who even cares?

The inclusion of “I Am the Best” alone would have marked “Collection” out as a contender for album of the year, but it practically machine-guns you with similar moments. Even where they get all serious and emotional, glorious moments shine through the schmalz — CL comparing the end of a relationship with Beyoncé leaving Destiny’s Child in “Go Away” can’t help but raise a smile.

Unfortunately, the closing cover of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” is a pointless, deflating end to the album. However, recent single “Scream” shows off the talents of the group’s production team, who are keeping 2NE1 one step ahead of the electropop crowd. Reworked versions of older songs such as “Fire,” “Follow Me” and “Clap Your Hands” retain the scattershot arrangements and chimp-going-crazy-with-the-autotune-knob-style madness that made them so gloriously silly and downright fun in the first place.

K-pop is dead: Long live K-pop.

News: Sandara Park – Jjangmae, Running Tournament, Who Is The Winner? “The Meat Is Mine~”

Sandara Park – Jjangmae, Running Tournament, Who Is The Winner? “The Meat Is Mine~”

Girl group 2NE1 member, Sandara Park, has went out on a running tournament.

On April 17, Sandara Park updated her me2day with, “Jjangmae VS Dara!!! Jjangmae, who will run really fast when there is meat to eat, is on the first lane!” she said.

She followed this with, “And when there are Blackjacks who call her! Dara, who will come running immediately, is on the second lane! Darong who has an expression of severe determination! What can be expected of her running skills?!?” revealing a picture along with her text update.

In the photo, Sandara Park is wearing a pink and white running outfit, with a matching head band. Particularly, her trademark “horn” hairstyle, added to her youthful charm and appeal.

While looking at the photo, the “point” is the match between Sandara Park and 2NE1 manager, Jjangmae. Even if they are still in the starting line, Sandara Park is throwing Jjangmae a fierce, pointed look, ready for competition, making netizens amused.

Netizens who saw the picture commented with, “I’m throwing my bet on Dara. Wah! Who will be quicker? But Sandara Park looks like she can run really well?” “When I call, you will come running? Dara-ya! Look at Jjangmae’s eyes! He looks like he’s ready to fight for the meat. Who will win this?” they said, cheering her on.

News: Fashion Designer Richard Chai Likes 2NE1 and Big Bang

Richard Chai plans to finally get some vacation time after he presents his collection. Where’s he going? “Maybe somewhere I can actually look like someone in my show,” he says laughing. He’s been unable to make it the beach all summer. Chai will present both his men’s and women’s spring/ summer collections together today for the first time. “Tons of color, kind of an eye explosion” is how he describes the clothes, a break from last year’s more sombre palette. Chai’s been loving Korean pop, like the girl band 2NE1(look them up!) and he’s also more confident than ever before. We find him amid castings, taking a break on the fire escape.

This go around, he’s excited to look for some new faces. “It used to be about major girls to give your show credibility. Now, it can be about the message, about the point of view being right.” This means championing thoughtful beauties with substance. Chai cites his friend Pace Gallery’s Nicola Vassell as example. There’s one more thing he wants to champion and that’s the diversity among New York’s fashion talent. Sometimes, everyone’s quick to try and categorize a moment with a generalized heading like, say, Asian designers. Chai says we can lump together the Antwerp Six, as they all came from the one school, and the same may be said of the Junya-Comme clan, but this group isn’t a similar “collective.” Chai points out even the subtle difference in that Phillip Lim and Alexander Wang are from the West Coast while he grew up on the East Coast. “It’s great to be recognized,” he says, “but not as a movement. We’re all so individual with different backgrounds.”

=====

In another article, Richard Chai also said that in today’s KPOP industry, he likes both 2NE1 and Big Bang.

Richard Chai is an American fashion designer. Chai creates clothes for an eponymous label. Before launching his own line, he designed for Marc by Marc Jacobs.

FASHION FIND: Dara’s Sleek, Simple Style At The Airport Going Back To Korea

OMG seriously, it took me so long to find the jacket and long-ish to find the sunglasses LOL (thanks to everyone who helped! Specially @imchie_b @zazayb @closer_21) ! And good thing someone was able to take a picture of Dara’s feet! Haha! I was despairing of ever finding her shoes for a while. T_T

Stylish Dara is stylish! Love how she keeps it simple but fun! I think she had the “B*TCH” red patches on the sleeves of her jacket removed so only the black remained, and TBH it’s not really clear by then. ^^ Love how Dara is conscious about what she’s wearing. Keke! ^^ Her pink plaid pants are the same ones she wore while she was in Singapore too.  Her  shoes, we’ve seen her wear it a few times also. Dara and Louboutins are practically OTP. Keke! ^^

News: Sandara Park, “G-Dragon Has A Prince Charming Syndrome” Supports

Sandara Park, “G-Dragon Has A Prince Charming Syndrome” Supports

Sandara Park supported the topic of G-Dragon having a “prince charming syndrome.”

On the broadcast of SBS “Strong Heart” for its second episode of “YG Special,” on the evening of the third, the topic “G-Dragon’s prince charming syndrome,” was opened by 2NE1 member, Gong Minzy. Sandara Park also revealed an event that supported this.

Sandara Park said, “In an interview I made in the past, I was asked about G-Dragon&TOP (T/N: I think this was during the GD&TOP promotions. Remember that after Dara’s interview, it showed GD&TOP’s interview also), and I said that G-Dragon was my ideal because of that time when G-Dragon carried my snowboard for me, which left an impression,” she said.

Sandara Park continued, “After that, G-Dragon approached me and said, ‘Why did you say that in a broadcast, you should have told me in person,‘” she said, “He was teasing me,” she explained further.

G-Dragon replied, “It’s a habit,” which caused a lot of laughter.
