Article: Rolling Stone – The 10 K-POP Groups Most Likely To Break In America

YouTube’s most-watched Korean pop music video, Girls’ Generation’s “Gee,” has earned 74,000,000 American views alone, even though most mainstream U.S. music fans have never heard of it. The song and video – a calculated, colorful, choreographed affair that sees the nine-member girl group smiling and winking for the camera in flirty outfits as they change formations and soloists without a hitch – epitomize how Korean pop music (K-Pop for short) has been able to break language barriers and captivate a passionate U.S. audience. More recently, acts have begun turning the interest into profitable American tour stops and announcing plans to officially release music stateside. And as if to officially christen the genre’s U.S. crossover potential as an internet phenomenon, Google will host a multi-act K-Pop concert at their California headquarters on May 21st, which will be livestreamed on their YouTube Presents channel.

In the past, popular Korean acts (like BoA and Se7en) made unsuccessful American debuts likely due to the fact that they were molded by American record labels to be presented in a way they saw best to break into the notoriously difficult market.

Yet K-pop has garnered a strong following without the help of any major American backing. K-Pop is a mixture of trendy Western music and high-energy Japanese pop (J-Pop), which preys on listeners’ heads with repeated hooks, sometimes in English. It embraces genre fusion with both singing and rap, and emphasizes performance and strong visuals.

Never very racy, K-pop could easily slide into America’s Top 40 market if correctly targeted at children and teenagers. The following are the 10 acts most likely to successfully crossover to America – as long as they’re allowed to keep the same sounds and concepts that made them popular in Asia.

2NE1

One of South Korea’s most notable acts, 2NE1 stands out for the wide array of sounds heard in their latest EP that includes the club banger “I Am The Best,” the slick electro-pop/hip-hop “Hate You,” and the emotionally charged “Ugly.” 2NE1’s genre-hopping and large personalities bring Nicki Minaj’s rap/singing approach to mind. Without any push into the U.S., the group caught the eye of will.i.am, who signed on to work on their American debut rumored to be released later this year. Listeners can get a sample of what a will.i.am/2NE1 production sounds like with the track “Take On The World,” currently being used for a promotional video for Intel. The foursome’s fierce fashion even caught the eye of designer Jeremy Scott who has styled for the group. Several of the members have strong English skills, and the group won the award for “Best New Band In The World” for MTV Iggy, an MTV initiative that showcases music from all over the world.

Article: 2NE1 Dons a Powerful Feminine Look with Adidas

2NE1 Dons a Powerful Feminine Look with Adidas

Always surprising the public with its unique fashion styles, 2NE1 revealed yet another take on fashion withAdidas Originals.

On May 17, Adidas Originals shared photos from its new 2012 S/S Women’s Collection, modeled by 2NE1. This year’s collection featured two kinds of styles, the ‘Big Trefoil Package’ and the ‘Summer Graphic Tee Collection.’

To commemorate the 40th anniversary since the birth of the Adidas trademark, Adidas decided to insert the trefoil logo on its vibrant tank tops, over-sized shirts, leggings, and dresses, creating a powerful, yet feminine look.

An Adidas representative said, “We chose 2NE1, who is Asia’s fashion icon, expecting that with the members’ unique styles and confidence, many women will also follow along. We hope a lot of women will fall in love with the ‘Originals Women & Summer Collection’ through 2NE1’s spread.”

Even with the unique styles and bright colors of the collection, the 2NE1 members pulled off the looks with no problem, adding their own spice into the clothes.

Article: Japanese Comedians Get Down on their Knees for 2NE1

2NE1 get treated like goddesses on a recent Japanese program.

On May 14, Nihon TV’s popular program, Shabekuri 007 invited 2NE1 as its guests.

Comedian, Arita Teppei, who observes K-Pop stars, introduced 2NE1 members saying, “They are part of Korea’s best hip-hop girl group, who are also receiving a lot of attention in the United States.

He continued to show that he was fan by saying, “I’ve been to three of 2NE1’s concerts. Instead of cheering them on, I’ve always wanted to work with them.

He then asked 2NE1 if there was anything the group needed and pretended to go buy things, gathering laughter from the audience.

But what particularly stood out was that Arita Teppei said that when watching 2NE1’s performances, they must get down on their knees, urging his colleagues to do the deed. They later followed it up with bowing to 2NE1. Arita Teppei continued to compliment 2NE1, saying that paying 3,000,000 won to see 2NE1’s performance is completely worth it.

Usually on this show, the hosts put the guests on the spot, by forcing them to present some unique talents or dancing, so to see the hosts on the floor on their knees was a rare sight to witness.

When 2NE1 sang, I Am the Best, the Japanese audience members surprisingly sang along the Korean lyrics, confirming 2NE1’s popularity in Japan.

On this day, Gong Minzy and CL showcased their sexy dancing, and Sandara Park brightly announced that she was the spokesperson for the group, handing out cards to everyone in the studio.

Meanwhile, 2NE1 plans on returning to Korea’s stage with a new album sometime in May.

Article: 2NE1 at #11 on Complex Music’s 25 Sexiest International Singers You’ve Never Heard Of

These days, American radio is saturated with Carly Rae Jepsen, Rihanna and other female superstars who are probably under the age of 25. Not that we’re complaining, but once you find yourself mouthing the lyrics to “Call Me Maybe,” you know you need to start listening to something else.

After witnessing Yuna perform at SOBS for Hot 97, we knew just where to look for new material: overseas. After days of trolling the web for other sexy female artists to switch up our playlist, we compiled our own collection of new (at least, to most of us) music. If you’re looking to broaden your musical horizons, check out our list of the 25 Sexiest International Singers You’ve Never Heard Of.

11. 2NE1

Country: South Korea

Since the four-girl pop group—consisting of CL, Minzy, Dara, and Bom—formed in 2009, they’ve already received a number of accolades, including “Song of the Year” at the Mnet Asian Music Awards for “I Don’t Care” and “I Am the Best” and “Best New Band” by MTV Iggy, before they could even put out their first full-length album. In March 2012, however, the cutesy foursome finally released their first LP, Collection, which features their second Japanese single, “Scream.”

News: Philippine Daily Inquirer – SHINee Young Things

Dara was mentioned in this Philippine Daily Inquirer article about SHINee and Etude. ^_^ It was cute how the boys praised Dara and vice versa.

(Omitted parts unrelated to Dara)

Recently, the boys had also signed on to be endorsers of Korean beauty brand Etude House, along with its mainstay, Sandara Park.  In Korea, it is not uncommon for men to become beauty brand endorsers, not just because of the Korean male actor’s delicate features bordering on androgynous, but because all of them have damn great skin.

Their TV ad spots for Etude House’s new lipstick line were really short films dubbed as “web dramas” by the brand.  The web dramas were a riff of popular Japanese anime “Death Note.” but with a sweeter outcome:  Kiss Note, where Sandara would write the name of her dream guy in a notebook using lipstick, and said dream guy would magically be compelled to kiss her—it’s every girl’s dream come true.   Apart from the lipstick, tins of tinted lip balm have been released called “Shini Star,” with each shade representing each SHINee member.  At the bottom of each tin lies a special message from each guy.

Super had the chance to go to a top secret location where SHINee and Sandara were shooting another TV ad for Etude House’s summer product, Precious Mineral Sun BB Cream.  We were brought to a sports complex an hour away from Seoul, where they were filming.  It was bitingly cold, but SHINee and Sandara seemed unfazed, clad in matching cotton-candy pink suits.

They had nothing but good words for each other.  When asked how it felt having to kiss each other for Kiss Note (Sandara had to kiss each member for each web drama installment, with the exception of Onew), the boys thanked Sandara for helping to ease them into the mood.  “It was not our first kiss, but we thank Sandara for making things comfortable despite the awkwardness of the situation.”  Sandara meanwhile, demurred when asked who was the better kisser. “Fake lang, pero siyempre kinilig pa rin ako,”  (It was fake but I still got giddy.) Sandara answered in Filipino, proving her still excellent command of the language.  Of the four web dramas she appeared in, she loved all of it, but considered the one with Minho to be memorable, “Yun yung romantic na episode!” (It was a romantic episode!)  she adds.  She even professes to be a fan of their music, having loved their first song, “Parang sinasabi lang nila ‘Ang ganda mo … ate,’” (It was like they were telling me that I was beautiful) she laughs.  SHINee’s first song entitled, “Noona Neomu Yeppeo” is a song waxing poetic about a pretty noona, a term referring to an older sister, or ate in our vernacular, cementing the group’s popularity amongst noonas and ates everywhere.
