Article:K-Pop Wrap Up:Who and What Dominated Headlines in January 2014 (2NE1,Gdragon,Taeyang and Others)

January has proven to be a very successful month for K-Pop’s infiltration into the United States and has been the month of the sexy girl group concept.

K-Pop made a strong start in 2014 as a musical genre that continues to spread throughout the globe. Artists such as YG Entertainment‘s G-Dragon and 2NE1 have been at the forefront of mainstream Western media attention with momentum that has not been seen since the spread of Gangnam Style. The U.S. arrival of U-KISS drew attention from numerous media outlets, who were surprised by the English proficiency of the group, as well as the college career of member AJ. In the midst of the month, headlines became dominated by the tragic news regarding the death of the father and grandparents of Super Junior‘s Leeteuk.

2NE1 established their newsworthiness in January, with the announcement of their upcoming All or Nothing album and a world tour in support of the album. 2NE1 along with YG Entertainment were featuring during Fuse TV’s week long Fuse Loves Seoul coverage, which delivered K-Pop onto prime time television in the United States. Furthermore, 2NE1 returned to American television at the end of January by performing on ABC’s The Bachelor. Their appearance on the episode led to more mainstream exposure for the group and an increase in sales of songs such as their hit I Am the Best2NE1 while filming the segment for ‘The Bachelor’.

News: 2NE1 ‘All Or Nothing’ Trailer Ignites Sperm, Womb, Pregnancy Theme Debate!

2NE1 ‘All Or Nothing’ Trailer Ignites Sperm, Womb, Pregnancy Theme Debate!

lol

The 2NE1 “All or Nothing” trailer has been earning a lot of buzz, and some discussions are perhaps more bizarre than others.

Last week, 2NE1 released a very theatrical trailer for their upcoming world tour and new album, “All or Nothing.”

According to 2NE1 member Dara on YG-Life, the inspiration for the trailer is that the members “come from the stars,” and the trailer shows an asteroid-like object flying towards Earth.

And while this is a very legitimate explanation for the “All or Nothing” trailer, some Blackjacks and viewers experienced discomfort watching it.

If you scroll through the YouTube comments, some are describing the asteroid as looking like a sperm impregnating a womb! The “All or Nothing” animation, which emphasizes the ‘O’ shape also seems to be leading certain viewers on about this interpretation.

You can see a really scathing review of this 2NE1 trailer here, where the same interpretation is used to describe the trailer as “stupid,” igniting hundreds of comments.

Even so, the members of 2NE1 appear to be very happy with the results of using chromatography technique and the galactic inspiration.

Such a cool teaser resulted from the detailed expressions of emotions from the members and everybody’s detailed efforts and this is happy, happy captain San,” writes Dara.

The look in the eyes of the youngest member got much sexier and the pose also became much more provocative when she turned 21… Wow, I am worried about you, Minzy!

What do you think of the 2NE1 “All or Nothing” trailer? Is it inappropriate or weird, or just plain cool?

On January 27, 2NE1 appeared on ABC’s hit reality show “The Bachelor,” fostering a new interest in the girl group in the United States and Canada.

The cast of “The Bachelor” visited YG Entertainment headquarters in South Korea. The show introduced YG to the cast as the place where “K-Pop in South Korea happens,” and compared 2NE1 to the Spice Girls, saying that 2NE1 are megastars in Korea. 2NE1 then welcomed the cast, who came into their dance studio, and taught them the dance to “I Am the Best.”

One of the girls on the show said, awestruck, “2NE1 is huge here in Korea. Their YouTube video has 77 million views. Million. That’s a lot of views.” 2NE1 also invited the “Bachelor” cast to perform with them for “I Am the Best” during their mini concert at Times Square in Seoul.

Following the broadcast of “The Bachelor,” 2NE1’s “I Am the Best” shot up to 3rd place on the U.S. iTunes’ electronic singles chart, and took over the top spot on Canada’s electronic singles chart, as well.

In other news, 2NE1 will be starting their second world tour in March at the Seoul Olympic Park SK Handball Stadium.

Feature/Photos: A Guide to the Style Stars of K-Pop

Taeyang, G-Dragon, 2NE1 and More: A Guide to the Style Stars of K-Pop

nymag cut

Of all the street-style stars to descend on Paris in the past few weeks, some of the flossiest — and most original — have been rapper G-Dragon and singer Taeyang, of South Korea’s beloved boy band Big Bang. Spotted in the front row at most of the bigger couture shows and fall menswear shows, they caused a general spectacle with their penchant for bejeweled boleros and multi-colored hair.

This is the first time G-Dragon has appeared at Fashion Week since a brief, pink-haired appearance in 2012, but Taeyang has been on a roll. He caused a frenzy with street-style photographers last summer in Paris, attending the men’s shows with a foot-high faux-hawk and kilts of tartan-plaid and bandana-print (with matching bank-robber face-gear). G and Tae have a mutual distaste for rules regarding color, fit, or gender. To that end, during the shows in Paris, the boys greeted many admirers, including Karl Lagerfeld at Chanel, Alber Elbaz at Lanvin, and Carine Roitfeld at Saint Laurent.

But the Bangers aren’t the only K-Pop stars making the street-style rounds. Blogs like K World StyleKpopstarz, andK-Fashionista breathlessly chronicle the looks of the genre’s best-dressed, including an ever-popular “Airport Style” feature — because unlike a good third of all U.S. celebs, you’ll never see a member of 2NE1 slogging through LAX in ratty flip-flops and Christian Audigier leggings. Click through our slideshow for a primer on the K-Pop street-style clan’s best and brightest.
