News: YG Entertainment Apologizes for Using Animals on 2NE1’s Comeback Stage

YG Entertainment has apologized over 2NE1’s recent comeback stage.

After 2NE1’s comeback stage on SBS’ Inkigayo for the group’s new single I Love You was met with strong criticism for its use of live animals during the performance, YG Entertainment has issued an apology.

The July 8 comeback stage for 2NE1 utilized a live parrot and swans for the group’s comeback stage which was met with fierce debate.

However, YG Entertainment finally spoke up about the issue saying, “We enlisted the help of animal trainers and other animal experts and did the stage performance with their consultation. If our efforts to create a good performance brought discomfort to viewers we apologize. We will focus on being more careful in the future.”

News: 2NE1’s Comeback Stage Sparks Debate For Utilizing Live Animals

What do you guys think about the controversy surrounding 2NE1’s use of live animals onstage?

2NE1’s Comeback Stage Sparks Debate For Utilizing Live Animals

Despite making a lively return on SBS’ Inkigayo, 2NE1 is now being swept into controversy over its comeback stage.

2NE1 held its comeback stage for its new track I Love You on July 8 on SBS’ Inkigayo.

Going all out for its comeback stage, live swans were seen being used as props for the set while 2NE1’s CL made a memorable emergence onto the stage carrying a live parrot on her shoulder.

The performance was immediately followed with criticism by some netizens for the group’s use of live animals as netizens began accusing the group of unnecessarily causing stress to the animals.

Netizens pointed out the parrot on CL’s shoulder could be seen nervously flapping its wings amid the loud music and fast movements while the swans grouped together amidst dry ice.

The incident has since sparked debate on whether the use of animals for the group’s stage boldly pushed the limits of stage performances or whether it cruelly and unnecessarily used live animals for the entertainment of humans.

Even high-profile individuals such as famous editor-in-chief Kim Hyun Sung of Oh Boy! magazine sounded off, tweeting, “2NE1 utilized a live parrot on [CL’s] shoulder and swans as props. [2NE1 members] are friends who make great music but we hope in their next stages they won’t do so. Animals receive a lot of stress from the heat from lighting and from unfamiliar environments.”

Interview: Kstar10’s Interview with 2NE1 – New Evolution, Fashion, Music and Inspiration

2NE1: “‘I AM THE BEST’ on stage” (Pt. 1)

There used to be a time in the Korean history when having a job in singing and dancing was regarded as a shameful thing. But now that is something very hard to believe for younger generations here. Singers are adored and get praised for their god-given talents, and without a doubt, they are now the leaders of Korean culture and fashion; and that’s where 2NE1 stands.

2NE1, debuted in 2009, is a group of four transgressive young women artists pioneering new music styles and fashion. Going beyond synchronized dance routines and repetitive chorus, they were the first K-pop group to dominate local online music charts with five singles in a row: ““Don’t Cry,” “Lonely,” “I Am The Best,” “Hate You” and “Ugly.”

If you think the group’s international acclaim in a little over three years of their singing career is hard to believe, wait till you hear what is next: “NEW EVOLUTION.” (Note: The original article wrote “REVOLUTION”.)

In between releasing the new single and going for the theatrical run, 2NE1 told the magazine about their world tour, “NEW EVOLUTION,” and their new tune– a cross-genre song of electronic and trot music– at the YG Entertainment office building in Seoul on July 6.

People of your generation didn’t grow up listening to trot music [an old Korean pop music genre based on four beats and sad melody from Japanese ballad “enka’”]. Was it not difficult understanding and digesting the genre?

Minzy: My parents love trot music so it wasn’t new to me at all.

CL: Even if you don’t grow up being exposed to trot music, you know the feeling of it. It wasn’t so difficult imagining what kind of message trot music has inside (its lyrics and melody).

Sandara: My mom loves trot so I used to sing “The man in Shinsadong” (translated title) a lot.

CL: Minzy was good at singing the trot parts of our new song.

For some reason this cracked me up a little! ^^ Who would have thought that an embassy would tweet something like this. But nevertheless, this is so cool!

Official: YG-Life – 2NE1 “I Love You” Dance Practice Video Premiere

I am so happy that 2NE1 will release a dance practice video! To be honest, as much as I loved 2NE1’s comeback stage in Inkigayo, it was all over the place. You couldn’t focus on anything because it was like a visual explosion. I’m glad that a dance practice video will be released so we can better appreciate 2NE1’s choreography in its (hopefully) simplicity.

News/Special Post: 2NE1’s Minzy’s Great Aunt Gong Ok Jin Passes Away

WE WOULD LIKE TO EXTEND OUR HEARTFELT CONDOLENCES TO THE  GONG FAMILY! MINZY, PLEASE STAY STRONG!

Update:

To show our deepest condolences to the Gong Family, OhDara (via @MamaWowa) ordered one flower wreath and WeLoveDara also ordered another flower wreath to be delivered to Madam Gong Ok Jin’s wake.

2NE1’s Minzy’s great-aunt and Korea’s legendary traditional dancer, Gong Ok Jin, passed away due to chronic illness earlier today.

In 1998, the famous folk dancer suffered from a stroke and had been fighting against the after effects of a stroke when she suffered yet another stroke in 2004. She was also involved in a car accident in 2007, which further declined her health. Born in 1931, Gong Ok Jin was highly known for her traditional singing, as well as her Korean folk dance. She created the “dance of the handicapped” and “animal imitation dance.”

Minzy has often talked about her great-aunt as both shared a passion for dancing. It’s been said that the two shared a close bond and that her Gong Ok Jin gave Minzy tips and monitored her performances.

A representative of YG Entertainment stated, “Gong Minzy heard the news of her great-aunt this morning and is on her way to Young Kwang with her parents. She’s devastated by the news.”

Meanwhile, 2NE1 made their comeback performance on SBS’s “Inkiagyo” yesterday with “I Love You.”

We send our deepest condolences to Gong Minzy and her family.

Note: Photos of Minzy and her family attending her great aunt’s (grandmother’s) wake have been up in Korean news portals for a while already. We have decided to take it upon ourselves to not post any photo of Minzy and her family grieving. While the photos have been made public, we firmly believe that we should respect Minzy and her family in their grief. Her life might be that of a celebrity and for public consumption, but I believe in her grief, Minzy needs her privacy. Her grief is her own and all we can do is support her.
