Article: NY1 – “Korean All-Girls’ Group 2NE1 Chats About Big US Debut”

Korean All-Girls’ Group 2NE1 Chats About Big US Debut

The Korean music group 2NE1 made a splash in the Asian music scene with the hit “Fire” in 2009, but this month the group made its U.S. debut by performing before thousands in Newark and Los Angeles. NY1’s Lewis Dodley met with the group and filed a special extended report for NY1.com.

It was billed as a “New Evolution,” as thousands came out in Newark and Los Angeles for the U.S. debut of 2NE1, an all-girl group from Korea that has become an international sensation.

The four members of the group — Bom, Minzy, CL and Dara — found their American audiences to be very enthusiastic.

“We had so much fun on-stage and the energy was there and I felt that our fans were having fun and we got their energy,” says CL.

The name 2NE1 is a play off of the phrases “to anyone” and “twenty-one.” Their choreography is very high-energy, and they say Minzy is “the dancer” in the group who makes up all the dance moves.

Dara drove the men wild at one point by kissing a male audience member on the cheek. But Dara says that was not a spur-of-the-moment decision.

“Actually it was planned, but the guy didn’t come up, so I had to go down,” Dara says.

Asked if they find success in the United States to be important, the members of 2NE1 say they want to be for everyone.

“I want people to enjoy our music, wherever it is, you know? That’s why we do music and I want people to connect to us,” says CL. “We do this for everybody.”

Their journey got underway three years ago with the hit song “Fire,” a symbol of the formula that’s gained the group millions of fans. The group gives credit to producer Teddy Park.

“We started with him. He made us, we could say that. And 2NE1, we work with a crew, with our stylist and anybody, and he’s like another member,” says CL. “He’s not with us, but he’s the musical director and he gives us direction for everything.”

The group’s videos are edgy and bold, but don’t confuse what you see with the real thing.

“We have this alter ego, I think. All four of us do. We have a reality TV show called ‘2NE1 TV’ and that’s where you can really see who 2NE1 in person really is. You know, if you see that reality show, we’re just like four girls, just four noisy girls,” says CL. “We’re just four normal girls, but on stage we have this side where someone comes out.”

The members of 2NE1 seem like sisters. Bom and Dara are the “biggest” sisters and Minzy, at just 18, is the youngest.

Before they came to New York, 2NE1 visited a child care center, and what was supposed to be a one-hour visit soon lasted three hours.

“I love kids and I love children, you know? It might seem like it’s nothing, just being there for them, but just hugging them and showing them love is so much to them. I just stayed there for like a couple of hours and they called me ‘Mom,'” says CL. “I couldn’t leave, you know? They were crying when I wanted to leave and I want to support them as much as I can and really being there for them is. I realize it’s important.”

The group has been working with the Black-Eyed Peas will.i.am., fueling speculation about an English-language offering, but nothing’s official yet.

“We want to have an English-language single out at least. I felt like many more people could connect to it if we have an English song,” says CL.

But for the crowds at Newark and L.A., language was not an issue.

“It’s really amazing, but it’s the power of music,” CL says.

Video: 2NE1’s Adorable Interview For Fader TV

Awww, the girls are all so cute sitting like bugs in the rug. ^^ CL’s hand on Dara’s shoulder before and near the end of the interview. ❤ When asked about their training, CL mentions that Bom and Minzy did 8 years, then she said that “Dara was a big star in the Philippines. She gave up everything to start over.” Awww, my DaRin heart! <333 CL also teased how Dara loved Korean food so much and that’s the thing she most missed. ^^ Dara also said that from the New Evolution tour concert, her favorite costume is the Adidas jacket with her face on it. XDDD

Interview with 2NE1

“After the K-pop group 2NE1’s World Tour stopover in New Jersey, the four girls stopped by FADER offices—along with four makeup artists, three publicists, bag handlers, a film crew and two tall and well-dressed drivers—to talk international school, their concert wardrobe designer Jeremy Scott and frozen yogurt.”

Interview: 2NE1’s Q And A On Facebook Live Chat!

The session started with 2NE1 introducing themselves.

MC: Your Facebook page has almost 3 million fans. That’s a lot of fans.

CL: Actually our Facebook pagesite has a lot of fans compared to our official fansite so that explains everything.

MC: How do you use Facebook to connect with your fans? Has it changed the way you interact with your fans?

CL: Yes! Earlier before I was dressing and I had another white t-shirt and I asked my fans, “What should I wear?” and they chose this black t-shirt for me.

MC: Do you share exclusive news with your fans on Facebook which you don’t share anywhere else?

CL: Yes of course. Since we’re travelling around the world. When we’re here (US), for our fans in Korea we would post pictures, things like that.

MC: Do you have your favorite photo that you share on Facebook that has the most likes?

Dara: I think it’s a picture of our concert.

Interview: Redd Kross’s Jeff McDonald On Why 2NE1 Are The New Ronettes

Legendary L.A. groovy punks Redd Kross are back for reals with a new album, Researching the Blues (Merge), and soldiering on with their insistence that punk is indeed groovy. They were never strictly “punk” according to the norms of the early-’80s California scene they grew up in; nor did they always sport the “Brady Bunch extras” look they cultivated later in that decade, when the founding brothers starred in the goofy cult classic Spirit of ’76 and went off about Charles Manson, Cher, shag carpeting, and whatnot. But brothers and founding members Jeff and Steve McDonald have consistently crafted oddly catchy tunes via an undying love for Cheap Trick and all loopy things L.A. And judging by their new record, they’re still as good as distilling those influences into songs as ever.

The band has had the same lineup for six-plus years, and when we caught lead singer/guitarist Jeff McDonald on the phone, they had recently returned from a two-week tour in Australia. Since the Brothers McDonald pop up in the occasional film and TV show, when Jeff started by saying he’d just returned home from Universal Studios I figured he was lining up a new role…

Who are some of your favorite girl groups?

You know, it’s weird, right now girl groups have made a huge resurgence via the Kpop scene, you know the Korean pop scene? A lot of the Kpop stuff is bad and I don’t really like it. But the good stuff is always done by girls. Right now I am obsessed with this group called 2NE1 [ed: 21, get it?]. I just discovered them through a Korean pop TV station in L.A. here, with subtitles. So what they do with Kpop is they have these entertainment production houses. So you’re signed when you’re a teenager, and then you’re a trainee for awhile—you get in physical shape, you dance like 20 hours a day, you learn how to deal with the press, and you record and record until you’re ready to make your debut. It’s kind of a cross between like the Phil Spector/Motown model and the Olympics gymnastic team. But 2NE1 have this reality show, and it’s really fascinating seeing people come up through that system. The guy that ends up producing and writing most of the songs is from the U.S. actually, he’s Korean-American. And these records are amazing! 2NE1 has recorded a couple songs in English. A lot are in Korean with English in the choruses; and a lot of the English is really bad broken English. But a lot of the YG Entertainment groups—the one that 2NE1 and Big Bang are in—everything is pristine as far as that. 2NE1 are the new Ronettes as far as I’m concerned.

Interview: W Korea – 2NE1 With Blockbuster World Tour: World Invasion

2NE1 With Blockbuster World Tour: World Invasion

Your newest single, “I Love You,” contains a trot melody and style, which was sure to be a new challenge for you. Being a new style, it must surely have been fun while working at it.

CL: It was already a challenge when we positioned to record it. Singing trot is not something we are familiar with. While doing the recording of the song, there were parts that were difficult, and I had to stay behind, while the other three members already finished.

Minzy: I joke that I have a trot side to me. However, the feel of 2NE1’s new song was totally different.

CL: There were a lot of changes during the recording. Compared to the original demo, only a few parts of it made the final cut, and we even modified some parts when we did the first recording, compared to the final.

When we heard the song, we became more and more curious about the performance and looked forward to the broadcast. 2NE1 will have a sexy image, with the choreography and costumes.

CL: Aside from that, the entire stage production has become feminine and sexy. It wasn’t awkward though, the unnies showed off an interesting side.

Would we see you in more broadcasts?

CL: Ever since our debut, we only went out on 3-4 broadcasts in a week’s time amd never more. It’s always been.. (Sandara Park whispers out something).. Huh?

Sandara: We never went to more than one or two shows (Everybody laughs).

CL: Ha ha, so I’ll fix what I said, we didn’t go to a lot. But it is because we want to show everyone a perfect stage, rather than many appearances.

You just made a comeback in July and will go straight to the world tour. There doesn’t seem to be much time to have activities in the local scene.

CL: When we were told that we won’t be having many stages for our comeback song, it was regretful, but since the first concert leg would be in Seoul, we felt a bit better. The preparations for the concert were held at the same time as practicing for our single, everything was just so busy. But we’re more happy working busily than resting.

Is this for real? The other members also feel the same thing?

CL: We don’t know how to rest well. We’ve practiced a busy lifestyle for so long, ever since we were trainees, to when we debuted, we spent more years practicing and performing on stage, compared to lounging around and resting. I think we’ve forgotten how.

Recently, the group has become hot topics for attending the Cannes International Advertising Festival, as speakers for K-pop during the seminar. You also had the photoshoot for W magazine in the same place, how do you find the atmosphere here?

CL: We didn’t spend that much time. We had to go straight to Italy because we had another schedule. We actually saw more of Cannes and had a chance to sightsee the area because of the photoshoot. It would have been nice to eat in different restaurants and walk along the pretty streets.

How did you feel when you experienced standing on stage as speakers?

CL: Although we’re used to standing on big stages, it was the first time that we were invited as speakers. We were very nervous and worried about it for a long time. We requested the organizers to change the format to an interview type, instead of giving speeches. We were able to speak more comfortably then.

Going back on stage for the first time for your comeback against speaking in for an international advertisement seminar, which one was more difficult?

Sandara: Of course, it was more difficult to be speaking.

CL: We get to change into someone completely different during performances. But speaking in a place like this where we had to show ourselves, it was more nerve-wracking.
