Article/Feature: 8 Krung-Krung Things We Love About Sandara Park
8 Krung-Krung Things We Love About Sandara Park
We’ve seen this Korean cutie from her Star Circle Quest days here in the Philippines to her rise as a member of the well-loved K-Pop group 2NE1. Apart from singing, dancing, modeling and acting, most of us have also known her for her cute and funny antics.
Sandara Park has always been adored for her innocent and youthful charm and many people actually forget the fact that she’s already turning 30 this year (her Korean age is 31)!

Although she’s now undoubtedly at the peak of her career, impressing millions of people around the world, and earning millions of money at the same time, we all know that Dara is still our sweet old Sandy. The perky, lovable, and “Pambansang Krung-Krung,” Sandy. And here are eight more things that make her special and extraordinary.
Yes, you’ve read it right–PPG as in the popular cartoon series The Powerpuff Girls. But here’s a funny story: during an interview for Star Circle Quest about her life story, she said: “My barkada’s name is PPG which means pokpok girls. Ay joke, Powerpuff girls.” So what is it, really, Dara? Although since she mentioned that her barkada was conservative, Powerpuff Girls definitely sounds more apt for them than, well, pokpok girls.

Dara may have millions of loyal fans now but she is a self-confessed fangirl herself. She is a big fan of Korean pop superstar Lee Hyori, and even admits being a member of the solo singer’s fan café. In fact, in an episode of SBS Family Outing, she showed a fan letter that she wrote to her idol and admitted that she even carried melons from the Philippines to Korea for her “Hyori-unnie” (ate Hyori).
Apart from her favorite fast-food chain, Jollibee, Dara has always been very vocal of her love for Gerry’s Grill. She has uploaded photos of herself eating at Gerry’s Grill, treating YG dancers to a scrumptious meal there, and has also admitted to bringing Bigbang to the restaurant’s branch in Tagaytay after the boyband’s concert here in Manila. Furthermore, there were also several instances of her telling her Twitter followers how much she loves the said place, even dubbing it her “forever favorite restaurant.”
Even 2NE1 members aren’t excused from this rule. There was one time when Dara really had to delete one of the members’ number from her phone. But guess what? She knows all their contact details by heart anyway. Good job, Dara.

To think that a single serving of ramyun is full of sodium, saturated fat, and other unhealthy ingredients! Well, perhaps there are times when it just gets really hard to resist the guilty pleasure of gulping a hot and spicy ramyun, especially during cold season. Even so, Dara generally practices a healthy lifestyle anyway.

Dear Dara, I am giving you permission (more like begging you) to take my phone while I am not looking and change my background photo to your selfie.

She’s scared of flying. One time, while on a plane together, Bom kiddingly told Dara that one of the plane’s wings is broken. Of course Bom was just kidding, but she didn’t realize things got really serious until Dara was already shaking in fear. And to think they have to travel a lot for their job!
Dara as a crab? Dara as a hotdog? Why not?! We’ve seen various pictures of her in these weird and funny costumes. It may look silly on other people, but when it’s Dara wearing it, it’s definitely cute and adorable!

“Hello Philippines! Mabuhay! I’m back,” Dara posted on Twitter.
Netizens went abuzz over Dara’s arrival as ‘We love Sandara Park’ and the hashtag #WelcomeHomeDara trended on Twitter. Sandara Park also trended in Yahoo Philippines on May 14.

Filipino fans fondly called her the Pambansang Krung-Krung, and she did several local movies and TV shows. Dara also released an album which includes the single “In or Out.”

Article: Phil Star – “No Park-ing for Sandara”
No Park-ing for Sandara
Then (inset): As winner of Star Circle Quest (2004). And now, as member of the hit K-Pop group 2NE1.
When Sandara “Dara” Park left the Philippines in 2007 to embark on a new career as a singer in her native Seoul, she brought fond memories about the country which she has learned to love as her second home, rightly so because it’s here where she first made a name in showbiz by winning the ABS-CBN talent search Star Circle Quest (SCQ).
She left behind not only dear friends but also the word Krung-Krung (roughly and fondly translated as lukaret) which has been incorporated into the local lingo.
In South Korea, Dara became popular as a member of the all-girl band 2NE1 (other members are simply called by their first name: CL, Minzy and Bom), formed by the YG Entertainment in 2009. Riding on the crest of the K-Popularity, the 2NE1 has attracted a following not only in Asia but also in other parts of the world. Pronounced “to anyone or twenty one,” 2NE1 is a combination of the phrases “21st Century” and “new evolution.”
Since then, Dara hasn’t “parked” her career; she has been constantly on the road. (Follow her on Twitter @krungy21, pambansang krungkrung ng Pilipinas.)
The 2NE1 will have a concert called 2NE1 All Or Nothing Tour on May 17 (next Saturday) at the MOA (Mall of Asia) Arena.
Here’s Conversations’ exclusive e-mail interview with Dara.
Hi, Dara. We Filipinos love you so much because we know that you love the Philippines and you never forget to update us on what goes on in your life and career. What are your favorite memories about the Philippines?
“Hello! Long time no see. I was very excited when I received an interview request from you. I’m doing well lately.
“2NE1 members and I are very busy these days taking a tour around different countries and cities every week. Upcoming is Manila. All members including myself have been longing for this moment. The Philippines is my second home.
“The experiences that I had in the Philippines are such precious memories. When I first went to the Philippines, I had a lot of difficulties due to a language barrier. I still remember how I cried at school, how my mother and I were taken aback when people asked us whether we were Japanese or Chinese while we were on our way to Cartimar Market, and how I received so much love and support from Filipino fans after participating in SCQ. I had my ups and downs but now that I look back, they are all precious memories.”
You are welcome anytime in the Philippines and we’re happy that you and your fellow 2NE1 members are coming for a concert on May 17. How many times have you visited the Philippines since you left in 2007?
“Thank you. I always think of the Philippines as a very warm-hearted place.
“After I left the Philippines in 2007, I became very homesick a number of times. Whenever I did, Mr. YG allowed me to go on a holiday to the Philippines. After the debut, I didn’t get a lot of opportunities to perform in the Philippines, which is very disappointing. I think we only visited the Philippines about five times. That’s why we are waiting eagerly for May 17th.”
You are still very popular in the Philippines and you still speak Tagalog. Who are your Filipino friends that you continue to communicate with?
“Actually, I don’t get to contact my friends in the Philippines very often. However, because a lot of people use Twitter and Instagram these days, I still keep in touch with my friends and I read their posts which are written in Tagalog.
“I keep in touch with my friends at school and friends in show business. We don’t get to talk very often, but when we meet up, we don’t feel awkward at all.
“Out of those friends, I randomly contact Luis Manzano.
“Recently, I became close with Ryan Bang. We are both Korean but we speak in Tagalog.”
I understand that your made-in-the-Philippine movies are being shown in Korea. Do you plan to do more acting?
“I was surprised myself when the movies were shown in Korea.
“I would love to act when I get a chance. I dearly miss acting and I would love to act not only in a Korean movie but also in a Filipino movie, especially in a romantic-comedy film! The Philippines is absolutely the best in romantic-comedy movies.
“I still watch Filipino movies often and whenever there’s a new movie out, my friends and fans in the Philippines send me a DVD, which I really appreciate.”
By the way, how is your group 2NE1 different from other K-Pop girl groups? You are only four members and the others have more.
“I think 2NE1 is different from the other K-Pop girl groups regarding music. All four of us have very different taste and character. One would wonder how four individuals with such different voice, style, taste and personality could act together as a group. However, when those four very different voices come together, 2NE1’s music becomes complete.
“Also, the lyrics are very straightforward and talk in a female’s point of view. Our songs represent females.
“Regarding fashion, we all wear what we each want to wear.
“Most importantly, we pursue an image that is very different from images of other K-Pop girl groups. Sometimes, we try ‘cute’ and ‘lovely’ concepts, but people still say 2NE1 is cool. It’s quite funny! We are just being ourselves but we are just a little different from others. It still surprises me how such different individuals formed a team together.
“2NE1, let’s have fun!”
Tell us more about your co-members. How do you decide what songs to include in your album and concert repertoire?
“2NE1 members are very special. We all have different roles in the group and each member has such unique charm, which makes 2NE1’s music fun to listen to and shows fun to watch.
“If you attend our concert, you will understand exactly what I mean. Leader CL’s charisma, main vocal Bom’s soulful voice and silliness, youngest member Minzy’s singing ability and amazing dance performance!
“We decide everything together except for which songs to include in the album or the concert.
“Of course, we receive a lot of support from Mr. YG, producer Teddy, and many other YG staff.
“With our newest album Crush, we tried to consider the listener’s perspective when we were deciding on the track list.
“This process was lots of fun, however. We are working very hard.”
Why do you call your concert in Manila All Or Nothing? What can we expect from the concert? Are you going to sing In Or Out?
“The tour title All Or Nothing is the perfect word that describes our feelings.
“We love music and we enjoy performing in front of our fans. It took us four years to release a studio album because we really wanted to create a high-quality album.
“We had some hard times and we really missed performing on stage and meeting our fans, so we put in everything that we’ve got in this album.
“Whenever we go on stage, we always think of having a blast and enjoying ourselves like there is no tomorrow. That’s why we decided on having All Or Nothing as our concert title.
“We have something special planned for our Manila concert, but it’s a secret! We don’t want to ruin the surprise so come check it out!
“Should I sing In Or Out? If the audience wants me to, I definitely will! In Or Out is my best hit song and I really miss singing it.”
Are you still Krung-Krung? How different is Sandara today from the Sandara that we know?
“I still have a Krung-Krung side to me, but I think I have become a lot more mature.
“As my Filipino fans already know, I used to cry a lot, hide and was too honest. I was like a little troublemaker. However, from those experiences, I learned to become more mature and I try to stop myself from making the same mistakes. Also, I was no longer young when I had an official debut as a 2NE1 member.
“However, when I’m with 2NE1 members, my mischievous side still comes out and whenever I go to the Philippines, I still become Krung-Krung. The Philippines brings out my Krung-Krung side. Here I come!”
Name three memorable performances of 2NE1.
“The most memorable was our debut stage. It was on May 17, 2009. Our concert in Manila is also on May 17th! It’s on our fifth anniversary.
“I’m so excited to spend this special day with our Filipino fans.
“I was extremely nervous five years ago, but on this May 17th, 2NE1 is going to get wild!
“There are so many memorable performances and stages so it is a little difficult to choose.
“2NE1’s first performance in the Philippines is especially memorable. All of my friends came. They anxiously clasped their hands together and looked even more nervous than me.
“Some of them shed tears, which I will never forget. It has already been three years, and that was our first and only performance in the Philippines. Finally, after three long years, we are having a concert!
“Let’s have fun and make this concert another memorable one!”
Tell us more about your album Crush.
“We have grown so much with our newest album Crush. It is similar to our mini album which was released in 2009.
“We challenged ourselves with various genres. We used to sing powerful music but in this album, we had soft, touching and melancholic songs as well. Crush includes the feelings of a mature woman.
“Most importantly, CL composed three songs herself.
“Since CL knows us very well, she wrote songs that successfully represent us. Also, we could show a different image. Our fifth member and producer Teddy and our new producer CL and 2NE1 together make the best team.”
After your concert, are you planning to visit places in the Philippines and see your old friends?
“To tell you the truth, though I am very excited to visit the Philippines, I am also a little worried. I have so many friends in the Philippines and so many places I want to visit, but I don’t have the time to do everything.
“Also, I am worried that my friends may be a little disappointed if I leave without meeting them. Last time, I didn’t have a lot of free time because it was a very tight schedule of three days.
“It will be very busy this time as well but I’m going to introduce amazing places and delicious food to 2NE1 members and YG staff. I’m going to be a tour guide! It’s a secret where I’m going to take them. I will let you know next time!
You are an endorser of beauty products in Korea. Any beauty tips for your fans?
“I think it is the best to look natural. For example, if you have skin trouble, it’s better to leave it alone than to try to cover it.
“Also, it is important to sleep well, exercise and drink a lot of water.
“If you are too busy and don’t have the time to sleep well or exercise, make sure to drink a lot of water! It really helps!
“Finally, don’t forget to have a positive mindset!”

EXCLUSIVE: Backstage with Sandara Park
2NE1 returns to Manila with “All or Nothing” tour
SEOUL — Fifteen minutes. That was all I had to interview former Kapamilya turned K-Pop superstar Sandara Park of the phenomenal girl group 2NE1.
Braving the icy weather of post-winter Seoul to watch 2NE1’s All or Nothing world tour launch, I had resigned myself to the idea that speaking with any of the girls would be next to impossible, especially with such short notice. But since the 12-city tour was headed for Manila, I felt compelled to at least try and take a chance.
With the help of the local concert producer, I went ahead and fielded my request. The initial response was as expected: The girls were extremely busy and there was no time to squeeze in an interview. But then a second email arrived – Dara can meet us briefly after rehearsals on the second night. It was nothing short of a miracle and I grabbed that fleeting opportunity, thanking the music gods for making it happen.
Less than three hours before the show, it was still unusually calm backstage at the SK Olympic Handball Stadium where the concert took place. Along the winding corridors that led to the interview site, dancers and staff moved casually about as muffled conversations and occasional bursts of laughter rang behind closed doors. In an incredibly surreal moment, I even caught a glimpse of 2NE1 leader CL in an oversized black t-shirt, stepping out of her dressing room while munching on a piece of bread!
At the VIP lounge, Dara arrived clad in her black-and-gold costume and braided hair, welcoming this writer with her warm and amiable smile. She appeared incredibly younger than her 29 years, looking just as fresh and vibrant as she did during her Star Circle Quest days a full decade ago.
Even more remarkable was the fact that she still spoke Tagalog fluently and with the same characteristic lilt that Filipino fans have always found endearing.
To break the ice, I handed her a small packet of dried mangoes as the customary pasalubong from home. Her eyes widened as she clutched the humble gift as though it was something utterly precious.
“Paborito ko ‘to!” she shrieked as she thanked me in a manner so disarming, it made me wish I had brought an entire crate. It left a mighty good feeling to know that fame has not spoiled the nation’s favorite quirky girl.
New songs, new image
According to Dara, the concept behind All or Nothing was just as the title suggested: a crucial turning point that is approached with a do-or-die attitude. “After five years, we’d like to showcase a new and improved 2NE1 – one that’s more mature, more daring, with new music and moves. We really pushed our boundaries and went all-out this time.”
For her part, Dara’s image overhaul called for showing off her scrumptious abs, achieved through a strict diet and exercise regimen. “Working out was fine,” she said. “It was the dieting that was difficult because I had to give up some of my favorite food, like ramyun. Nagutom ako!”
She also revealed her recently acquired guitar skills, strumming away in Seoul during the acoustic version of “Come Back Home.” Will she reprise this for the Manila show? “I want to,” she replied with a diffident chuckle, “but I need more practice, especially with the F-chord!”
Then of course, there’s that naughty “lap dance” portion while performing their hit single, “I Love You” – a routine that was such an unexpected detour from the girls’ fierce image, it had fans shrieking from both sheer delight and shocked disbelief.
“Ganun ba ka-daring ang ginawa namin?” she murmured coyly with a slight blush. “Siyempre gusto namin ipakita ang bagong side ng 2NE1… Pero sa concert lang namin gagawin ‘yan at para lang sa mga fans.”
Anniversary celebration
All or Nothing in Manila goes onstage at the Mall of Asia Arena on May 17 — an auspicious date that coincides with 2NE1’s fifth anniversary since debuting in 2009. Not surprisingly, Dara revealed the timing wasn’t entirely by happenstance.
“During the planning stage, they showed us the tour schedule and I saw that May 17 had been blocked off. Sabi ko dapat sa Manila ito! Napaka-special ng araw na ‘yan at gusto ko talaga sana makasama ang mga fans namin sa Pilipinas.”
Dara added that their “group birthday” was so special for her and teammates Bom, CL and Minzy, they would mark each anniversary by exchanging identical gifts like rings, bracelets or pendants. Last year, she gave everyone matching pink sneakers (which they can’t wear that often because “masyadong cute”).
“We don’t celebrate in a big way,” she disclosed. “But we always make time to get together for dinner, just the four of us.”
Things will change drastically this time around as AON Manila promises to be their most extravagant anniversary ever. While they had visited the country twice, this will mark 2NE1’s first full concert here.
“Performing in Manila is a dream come true for me,” Dara remarked with unconcealed excitement. “Hindi ako makapaniwala… We miss our Filipino fans so much… ‘Yung mga tili nila, iba — sobrang saya!”
‘Pambansang Krung-Krung’
Without a doubt, Dara’s lifelong bond with the Philippines has remained strong and widely recognized. Fans all over the world have become familiar with her Tagalog messages on social media when conversing with Filipino friends, her fondness for sinigang na hipon and Chicken Joy, as well as her trademark greetings “Mabuhay” and “Mahal ko kayo!”
Going beyond lip service, the self-proclaimed “Pambansang Krung-Krung ng Pilipinas” has shown her affinity with the Filipino people when it mattered most.
At the height of Typhoon Haiyan’s devastation, she and brother Sanghyun (a.k.a “Thunder” from the boy band MBLAQ) immediately launched an online campaign to raise funds for rehabilitation efforts. In their video appeal, the siblings urged the public to donate generously in helping the country they affectionately called their “second home.”
Wrapping up our quick chat, I asked Dara if she planned on doing anything special to mark her homecoming – which happily coincides with her tenth year in showbiz after being discovered by ABS-CBN in 2004.
Calling to mind her double platinum recording as a teen star, she playfully quipped: “Hmmm… siguro sa encore, puwede kong kantahin ang In or Out! Kung may mag-request lang naman at kung gusto nila!”

Amazing Celebrity Siblings: Is It In Their Genes?

In order to become a celebrity, you need talent as well as good looks that can stand out and outshine regular citizens. For this reason, it’s not an easy feat to have even just one celebrity in the family, let alone more than one. However, there are an increasing number of celebrity siblings appearing in the entertainment industry in recent years.
Idol siblings, 2NE1’s Sandara Park and MBLAQ’s Thunder are known for their round eyes and extremely small faces, acting as the nation’s baby-face siblings. The numerous photos of them together show off their incredible visuals, as well as their similar fashion styles.
Now, siblings are even forming groups together. Lee Chan Hyuk and Lee Soo Hyun of Akdong Musician (AKMU) have debuted as a sibling duo after winning on SBS’ audition program, “K-Pop Star Season 2, ” in 2012. They instantly received the public’s love and interest with their numerous self-composed songs and original music style that is hard to come by in today’s music industry.
Following Akdong Musician’s win on the audition program through a relatable original song, they signed a contract with YG Entertainment. Also, they have been garnering more and more attention after finishing up their successful debut stage onMnet’s “M! Countdown” on April 9.
The public’s expectations for these celebrity siblings are rising and you can’t help but think that it runs in their blood when you see such talented and good looking siblings in one household.

Article:2NE1 take ethnic fashion to the extreme for ‘Vogue Korea’… So chic!
2NE1 transformed into African girls, “We want to challenge new things”
[OSEN=Kim Sa Ra] Girl group, 2NE1 has transformed into attractive African girls through photo shoots of fashion magazine, ‘Vogue Korea’s May issue.
Members of 2NE1 have digested African styles by wearing shocking face paintings, strong primary-colored clothes, and holding fruits, trees and leather.
The latest clothes have been brought from abroad for the shoot of the pictures of 2NE1 who are fashion icons that the world pays attention. Jeremy Scott, who has close relationship with 2NE1, has sent the latest clothes of autumn/winter collection that was on show last month.
2NE1 says, “Since we have met every day for almost 10 years, it feels like we live life together than doing something special”. They showed how much they consider each other even though the shoot was taken until late dawn.
CL said through the photo interview, “It is a fate that unique and funny people that were living their each life have gathered in the name of 2NE1.” Dara who was praised by staffs for her smooth charisma said, “There is no restriction for styles yet, so I would like to challenge new things”.

Fashion Feature: [STARCAST – What Should I Wear This Week?] An Early Summer Weather, Enjoy it Like the Stars
[STARCAST-What should I wear this week?] An early summer weather, enjoy it like stars
It is clearly spring and is a nice spring. It looks like the days in which it will be good to go outside are going to continue. The highest temperature is expected to be around 20 degrees Celsius. In one word, the spring that is like early summer is expected.
The second week of April that skipped spring, it will be ok to take out the see-through jacket and a half-sleeve shirt. It is not going to be awkward at all. The missing bottom look is okay also for sure. It is said that the days in which it is hot too wear hot pants is going to continue.
‘What should I wear this week’ that ‘STARCAST’ prepared. It is fashion for early summer that came all of a sudden.
▶ Thursday, April 17th | Lowest 9 degrees, Highest 20 degrees, Cloudy and then raining : There is not going to be that much change in temperature. It is expected that it will slightly get cloudy in the morning and rain in the afternoon. Taking the umbrella with you on the way to work is necessary.
Suggestion ① Mini look : On rainy days, we strongly recommend short clothes. It is easy to mess up the style due to the rain if you wear long pants. It can never happen with the shorts, just like Yoona. She went a step farther and wore a mini skirt made up of vinyl fabric.
The choice of shoes is also important. Since it is not going to rain in the morning, it is a little too much to wear the rain boots all day. In times like this, wear the boots with narrow ankles. It is good to wear a boxy t-shirt rather than a tight top. There is no need to worry about the body shape showing a little even when it gets slightly wet by the rain.
Suggestion ② Patch leggings & The baseball jacket: If concerned about the short clothes, there is a solution. Refer to ‘2NE1’ Bom. She wore leggings with a net patchwork to shorts. It can still look cool while decently covering the legs.
In the cloudy weather, give a point with vivid colors. It might look depressing if the prop is also dark. The colors such as neon orange high top shoes or pink mini bag are perfect.
▶ Friday, April 18th | Lowest 10 degrees, Highest 16 degrees. Very cloudy : It is the day after spring rainfall. The temperature will go down a little. The rain stopped but the clouds will not go away so it is expected that the cloudy weather is going to continue.
Suggestion ① Rider jacket & camo pants: If the temperature drops a little, you have to especially pay attention to the outer clothes. It is easy to catch cold if you just wear light not thinking about the temperature. Try wearing a rider jacket. It is perfect for inconsistent spring weather.
What if you want to avoid the clothes that show the body shape? Wear a loose fit long shirt as an inner wear. It naturally covers the hemline. The vibe will get much more powerful if you match the military style skinny jeans. Unify the high top shoes with the color that is same as the jacket. It is for the style balance.
Suggestion ② Blouse & Cardigan: Do you want a simple style? Then we recommend blouse and cardigan, which are steady styles in between the seasons. Gu Ha Ra from ‘KARA’ wore a white blouse that match well with all cardigans. She looks neat and tidy but chic at the same time.
If the temperature rises a little, wear a cardigan. It will look cool in a chic way. If you are too lazy for that, tie it around the waist. It is European style. The skinny jeans that shows the body shape tightly matches the most to a blouse.
