The ultra-popular Korean quartet bring an LP of fierce, genre-bending tracks and promise loads of music videos. Here’s why you should listen

K-pop girl group 2NE1 are one of the driving forces in K-pop’s international expansion. The quartet was the first Korean female group to stage a world tour, will.i.am snagged them for his #willpower LP, they have 6.4 million Facebook likes and 2.1 million YouTube subscribers. Hey, they even co-starred on an episode of The Bachelor.

So—as Fuse News’ Liz Walaszczyk asked when she was with the girls in South Korea—why only one album after nearly five years together? Leader CL explained, “An album is like a footprint. It’s legacy.” With Crush, their second full-length album, 2NE1 continue to be K-pop’s fiercest females by reminding listeners what made them so unique in the first place. But it’s not all familiar: The girls have plenty of new tricks up their sleeves.

1. Returning to Their Roots

Most listeners’ introduction to 2NE1 comes via the ferocious “I Am the Best,” arguably their signature tune. With nearly 86 million YouTube views, it’s one of the most-viewed K-pop videos ever. From the first notes of album opener “Crush,” it’s clear that the girls are back: This song has the same Middle Eastern influences heard in “IATB,” but over a zippy electro-pop production enhanced by dope rapping and powerful belting. While the quartet played around with reggae pop and acoustic ballads in past singles like “Falling in Love” and “Missing You,” this feels like the statement 2NE1 needed to truly make a comeback.

2. Reggae/Trap Hybrid Lead Single “Come Back Home”

Crush’s lead single “Come Back Home” mashes two seemingly disparate genres and makes them into one smokin’ single. Starting with a bouncy beat similar to Rihanna’s “Man Down,” the girls croon about losing a lover, asking their baby to “come back home” until the single’s production flips into a heavy trap beat. The ambitious song should stand up well next to past 2NE1 singles.

3. We’re Getting Four Music Videos!!!

2NE1 have more than half a billion views on their YouTube channel thanks to their high-budget visuals, fierce fashion and dope personas. But according to 2NE1’s Korean label, we’re getting four more videos to obsess over soon! There will be visuals for “Come Back Home” and its accompanying “unplugged” version. Plus, snappy dance track “Gotta Be You” and bouncy pop track “Happy” will get the MV treatment, too.

4. Potential to Sell A Lot

As one of the top K-pop acts to make moves Stateside, Crush raced into the Top 10 of the iTunes Albums chart despite no American promo. Plus “Come Back Home,” “Crush” and “MTBD” are all climbing up the iTunes Pop Songs chart. With its Wednesday release, Crush won’t have a full week of sales like other new albums, which could affect its likeliness to hit the Billboard charts. Still, with four music videos already planned, the LP could be a steady-seller versus falling off the chart after one week.

5. Tug at Your Heartstrings, But Throw Your Hands Up

2NE1 manage to convey heart-wrenching concepts without throwing their feel-good vibe out the window. On “Happy,” a song that practically begs you to roll your windows down and sing along, Bom croons the brilliant lyric, “I’m not happy, but I hope you’re happy” to a lost lover. Similarly, reminisce about your ex with “Gotta Be You,” but keep your dancing shoes on amid lyrics about being stuck in a jail named “You.”

6. Hello R&B!

While we certainly appreciate 2NE1’s affinity for EDM and Auto-Tuned hits, we absolutely love that R&B receives plenty of shine on this album. Both “Good to You” and “Baby I Miss You” prove that the quartet can deliver clean, crisp vocals on top of soothing piano beats. The latter boasts a synthy lounge vibe with a notable verse from CL, whose flow is right on point.

7. CL the Soloist Truly Arrives on “MTBD”

Watch out Nicki—CL slays on this track. The self-proclaimed “baddest female” completely stuns on standout track “MTBD,” the rapper’s solo performance. At the gym? Blast this baby. Need a post-wake up hype song? Done. Need a life hype song? This is it.

8. “Scream” in Korean

2NE1 fans will instantly recognize “Scream” as a 2012 single originally released in Japan. While it’s not uncommon for K-pop acts to re-record tracks in other languages—most often re-recording in Japanese and English—some do suffer from awkward translations that don’t keep the syncopation like the original. But somehow we think “Scream” actually ended up more fierce with this K-pop rendition. We particularly love CL’s line in the first verse, “Why you keep callin’ me honey?!?”

9. “Come Back Home (Unplugged Version)” to Close the Album

When 2NE1 fans were told one of the “10 new songs” on Crush would be an unplugged version of the single, some may have felt slighted. But ending the album with an acoustic production puts a much-welcome spotlight on the four distinct voices. Bom’s powerful belts, Dara’s sweet crooning, CL’s charismatic rapping and young Minzy’s strong, still-maturing vocals. It’s a lasting reminder of why this group is so special and why so many fans support 2NE1 as people, instead of just an act with catchy music.

SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Yonhap) — K-pop group 2NE1 released its long-anticipated second full-length album Thursday, nabbing the top spot on numerous music charts in a matter of hours.

Soon after its release on online music services at midnight, “Comeback Home,” the main track on the album “Crush,” topped real-time charts of 10 services, including Melon, Mnet, Olleh Music, Naver Music, Daum Music and Bugs.

Another major piece, “Gotta Be You,” came next on those charts while most of the remaining tracks also placed high.

“Crush” has 10 songs, all of which are new except for one that is the Korean language version of a song previously released in Japan. Among them, three were written and composed by the band leader CL.

The four-member band is set to present the new songs for the first time at concerts in Seoul on March 1-2. The first concert will be broadcast live through the domestic portal service Naver, according to the group’s management agency, YG Entertainment.

2NE1 is expected to compete fiercely with Girls’ Generation over music charts and TV music ranking programs for the time being as the two popular groups with many fans at home and abroad released new albums in the same week.

Girls’ Generation managed by S.M. Entertainment had been at No. 1 on those music charts since the release of its fourth mini-album “Mr. Mr.” on Monday.

Popular K-pop girl group 2NE1 has returned to the music scene ― and with a powerful force.

The four-member hip-hop-infused girl group released their sophomore studio album “Crush” on Thursday, immediately sweeping all local real-time music charts.

The title track “Come Back Home” topped the music charts of major online music services such as Melon, Bugs Music, Naver Music, Daum Music, Cyworld Music, Soribada and Monkey3.

“Gotta Be You,” another title track, trailed behind closely at second place. Other songs from the album filled the rest of the top 10 list with singles such as “Crush” ― produced and written by the group’s leader CL ― “Baby I Miss You” and “Hope to Live” soaring on the charts.

“That a single group is dominating all of the major music charts ― and with several songs ― is a rare achievement in the music world, reaffirming 2NE1’s strength and potential,” said YG Entertainment in a press release on Thursday.

The title of 2NE1’s new album “Crush” embodies a dual meaning ― to destroy and to also fall madly for someone. The 10-track album features the group’s distinctive color and style that has pushed them to the forefront of the K-pop scene over the years.

The top-ranking title track “Come Back Home” is the result of a collaborative effort by YG’s main producer Teddy and other junior producers in the company. The song is a mash-up of different genres including R&B, reggae and hip-hop and features an addictive retro melody with a modern sound source.

2NE1 is scheduled to stage the first live performance of their new songs at the Olympic Handball Stadium in eastern Seoul on March 1-2.

2NE1 swept the Korean music charts following the release of their new album “Crush” last night.

The single “Come Back Home” landed at No. 1 on several Korean real-time charts to achieve “all-kill” status.

According to chart tracker Instiz, the song is No. 1 on Melon, Bugs, Olleh, Soribada, Naver, Daum, Cyworld, Monkey3 and Genie.

Eight other songs from the album are also on the top 10 of Naver’s real-time chart.

2NE1 also occupied the top nine slots on Olleh’s real-time chart.

The girl group will be starting their “All or Nothing” world tour on March 1 and 2 in Seoul.

At a press conference last week in Seoul, American concert director Travis Payne praised 2NE1 members.

“BOM is like a lovely fairy, while CL is a lovely hard-worker. MINZY is an amazing dancer who knows how to enjoy music,” said Payne, adding that Sandara Park is a “funky angel.”

He added, “The four combined makes them powerful musicians. I worked with many female groups in the past, but compared to others, all members of 2NE1 have the advantages to become artists.”

Payne previously worked with the late Michael Jackson and Big Bang’s G-Dragon.

“Crush” contains 10 tracks including, “Come Back Home,” “Gotta Be You,” “Crush,” “If I Were You,” “Good to You,” “Happy,” “Scream,” “Baby I Miss You,” and an acoustic version of “Come Back Home.” It will be released in music stores in Korea on March 7.

2NE1 has made a successful comeback after a long hiatus, as it took over music charts following the release of its 2nd full-length album ‘Crush’ at midnight of February 27th.

As of 8AM (KST) on February 27th, 2NE1’s double title songs ‘Come Back Home’ and ‘Gotta Be You’ ranked highly on music charts like Melon, Mnet, Bugs, and Genie, and also overtook Girls’ Generation’s ‘MR.MR.’ which had been released earlier at 5PM (KST) on February 24th.

‘Come Back Home’ was a joint production by Teddy, PK, and Dee.P and is a multiple genre song that incorporates R&B, reggae, and Hip-hop styles. There was also an unplugged version of ‘Come Back Home’ included in the album. ‘Gotta Be You’ was produced by Teddy, PK, and MASTA WU, and is described as a song with a popular appeal, and the main part in which Minzy and Park Bom cries ‘GOTTA BE YOU’ leaves a very strong impression.

The album also contained songs like ‘CRUSH’, ‘If I Were You’, ‘Baby I Miss You’, ‘SCREAM’, and ‘MTBD’ which leader CL wrote lyrics for. Among the songs included on the album, CL wrote lyrics for 5 songs while also composing for 3, and was proof of her talent in song composition.

2NE1 will begin their 2nd world concert tour ‘AON: All or Nothing’, starting with Korea on March 1st and 2nd, where they will perform their new 2nd album songs for the first time at Seoul’s Olympic Park SK Handball Stadium.

2NE1 entered into top 10 with the new album ‘CRUSH’ on the comprehensive album chart that America’s iTunes released on the afternoon of February 27th(Korean time). Including Kid Cudi, 2NE1 joined the group of famous stars such as Beck, who got the grand award in Grammy Awards, and Romeo Santos and so on.

2NE1 released the new album ‘CRUSH’ at midnight on this day, and with the double title songs ‘COME BACK HOME’ and ‘GOTTA BE YOU’, they showed the dignity of completely dominating 1st place in all music websites in Korea.

They created sensation in Korea’s music market and at the same time, they are standing out in global music market so they predicted the sensation toward this album.

They did not let go of characteristics of appealing to public even when they were doing musical experiment, and tried various things such as listing the song written by the member CL and so on.

2NE1 released the second regular album ‘CRUSH’ at midnight on February 27th and revealed the double title songs ‘COME BACK HOME’ and ‘GOTTA BE YOU’. In addition, total of 10 new songs such as ‘CRUSH’, ‘IF I WERE YOU’ and ‘BABY I MISS YOU’ and so on in which CL participated in writing the lyrics and producing the song for the first time were listed.

6 years since the debut, in this second regular album, it contains the growth of 2NE1 the way it is. They did not let go of the trend, unique points for genres and deep sentiment while growing as only authentic women hip hop group in Korea. They have nicely balanced the characteristic of appealing to public and trying new things while maintaining 2NE1’s identity.

First, the title song ‘COME BACK HOME’ is a song that mixed genres of reggae, hip hop and dub step and so on. When the title of ‘COME BACK HOME’ was revealed, there were lots of reactions that think of Seo Taiji and Boys, but it is a song that has impact that contains the style of 2NE1. A melody that is easy and comfortable to listen to harmonized well with calm restoring-the-old rhythm in the intro and it raised addictiveness while adding freshness.

Another title song ‘GOTTA BE YOU’ is a song that can appeal to the public more. Unique synth sound and rhythmical rap is harmonized and the beat and melody is catchy. It did not let go of characteristics of appealing to public while containing the style of 2NE1 nicely.

The song written by CL pursued diversity for each genre and got the attention. ‘CRUSH’ reminds of 2NE1’s unique powerful music and ‘IF I WERE YOU’ is a little more sentimental song and a unique vocal and refined melody is charming. ‘BABY I MISS YOU’ in which a member Bom highly complimented well-emphasized R&B and City Pop and so on and the comment says that the calm and refined atmosphere is memorable.

CL’s solo song ‘MTBD’ is also impressive. The lyric that is unique and keep repeating such as ‘MTBD, MTBD’ and so on harmonizes perfectly with CL’s charming voice and rap. It contained the charm unique to CL nicely with free and fun feeling.

In addition, ‘GOOD TO YOU’ is a song that has R&B soul’s sentimental mood, and ‘HAPPY’ is a song that is cheerful and happy. 2NE1’s charming vocal and rap expressed many emotions.

It is also getting positive reactions from the public. The title song ‘COME BACK HOME’ became 1st place in 9 music websites such as Melon, Mnet, Bugs, Soribada, NAVER Music, Daum Music, Olleh Music, Cyworld Music and Genie and so on as of 9am on this day and another title song ‘GOTTA BE YOU’ became 1st place on Monkey 3. Not only that, more than 8 listed songs by 2NE1 are ranked as top 10 in most music websites such as Mnet, Bugs, Soribada and NAVER Music and so on, and shows lining-up-in-a-row phenomenon.

Meanwhile, 2NE1 will hold the second world tour ‘AON(ALL OR NOTHING)’ at Seoul Olympics Park SK Olympics Handball Stadium from 1st to 2nd of next month, and will reveal the performance of the new song for the first time.

CRUSH, unveiled at 0 hour of Feb 27 through various online sites, revealed its potential by holding trends and sentiments unique to 2NE1.

2NE1 unveiled their double title songs “COME BACK HOME” and “GOTTA BE YOU,” which clearly show their matured music and deepened sentiment.

“COME BACK HOME” is a classy song of a crossover genre song that encompasses R&B, reggae and hip-hop with a vintage melody and modern sound. In the latter part, it refreshes the ears with an EDM trap. The lyrics that are easy to follow are indeed addictive.

The second song “GOTTA BE YOU” brings in unique synthetic sounds and rhythmical rapping. CL dominates the song with her fun and sentimental rapping. The latter part is joined by strong and upbeat  old-school melody.

2NE1 made a great leap forward in the last 6 years. They catch up with the current trend while keeping their true colors.

At 7am on Feb 27, the new album is sweeping 9 major music sites like Mnet, Melon, Genie, Olleh and Daum music, Bugs, and Cyworld Music.

They are lining up the charts with songs in their album including “CRUSH,” “GOTTA BE YOU,” “IF I WERE YOU,” “GOOD TO YOU,” “MTBD,” “HAPPY,” “SCREAM” and “BABY I MISS YOU.”

The group attracted much attention, as its comeback date was the same as Girls’ Generation’s. The latter group revealed their 4th mini album 55 hours before 2NE1 under the title “Mr. Mr.” which now stands at rank #5.

2NE1 is set to kick off their 2nd World Tour “ALL OR NOTHING” at Seoul Songpagu’s Olympic Park SK Handball Arena on March 1 and 2, where they will perform their new songs for the first time.

Girl group 2NE1’s second regular album that was released at 0am on the 27 is creating sensation, sweeping the real-time charts of different music-streaming websites.

On the day, 2NE1 took the No.1 place in NAVER’s real-time search word chart, upon the release of their new music. Then, they dominated real-time music charts, succeeding in topping all the major music charts and making multiple songs take top places in them.

Notably, title track “COME BACK HOME” topped the real-time charts of all the ten major music websites in Korea, upon being released.

Another title track “GOTTA BE YOU” is ranked in the second place on the charts of ten music-streaming sites, competing with the other title “COME BACK HOME”, which is a very interesting and unusual scene.

Besides the double title, most of the songs in the new album’s track list, including “CRUSH”, co-composed and written by YG producers and CL, “IF I WERE YOU”, “BABY I MISS YOU”, and CL’s solo track “MTBD” are in the top ten places in most of the music charts.

“COME BACK HOME”, which is dominating the No.1 places in different music charts, was co-produced by YG’s main producer TEDDY and other producers. It is a cross-over dance music created by combining different genres including R&B, reggae, and hip-hop.

Before the disclosure of 2NE1’s new songs, BIGBANG member G-DRAGON posted a mention “2NE1’s new album will be disclosed soon. You’ll not be disappointed, so just listen to it”, and EPIK HIGH’s member TABLO also posted a mention, “2NE1 is coming”, which drew much attention from fans.

Internet users are also very much interested in 2NE1’s comeback and say, “Every song in 2NE1’s new album is so good”, “Expectably, 2NE1’s proven to be the best girl group”, “2NE1 is creating sensation without exposing themselves”, etc.

2NE1 is sweeping music charts with tracks from their second studio album “Crush.” The group released their new album on February 27 at 12:00 AM KST, rapidly topping Naver’s real-time search terms and attacking online music charts.

“Crush” has achieved all-kill status, and all tracks on the album are currently lined up one after another on music charts, exhibiting the album’s explosive reception in Korea.

One of their two title tracks, “Come Back Home,” made a clean sweep of the charts, seizing the number one position on 10 real-time online music charts almost immediately (Melon, Bugs, Mnet, Naver Music, Daum Music, Olleh, Cyworld Music, Soribada, Monkey3 and Genie).

The main competitor to “Come Back Home” is 2NE1’s other title track, “Gotta Be You,” which has taken second place on all 10 of the music charts listed above.

The album’s other eight tracks, including CL’s compositions, “Crush,” “If I Were You,” and “Baby I Miss You,” aren’t doing too shabbily themselves, with almost all of the tracks occupying top ten spots on most charts.

“Crush” will be released offline on March 7, following 2NE1’s first two concerts of their “All or Nothing” World Tour in Seoul on March 1 and 2. The group will be broadcasting their rehearsal for this weekend’s “All or Nothing” concerts live on Naver at 7:00 PM KST.
