What do you guys think about the controversy surrounding 2NE1’s use of live animals onstage?

2NE1’s Comeback Stage Sparks Debate For Utilizing Live Animals

Despite making a lively return on SBS’ Inkigayo, 2NE1 is now being swept into controversy over its comeback stage.

2NE1 held its comeback stage for its new track I Love You on July 8 on SBS’ Inkigayo.

Going all out for its comeback stage, live swans were seen being used as props for the set while 2NE1’s CL made a memorable emergence onto the stage carrying a live parrot on her shoulder.

The performance was immediately followed with criticism by some netizens for the group’s use of live animals as netizens began accusing the group of unnecessarily causing stress to the animals.

Netizens pointed out the parrot on CL’s shoulder could be seen nervously flapping its wings amid the loud music and fast movements while the swans grouped together amidst dry ice.

The incident has since sparked debate on whether the use of animals for the group’s stage boldly pushed the limits of stage performances or whether it cruelly and unnecessarily used live animals for the entertainment of humans.

Even high-profile individuals such as famous editor-in-chief Kim Hyun Sung of Oh Boy! magazine sounded off, tweeting, “2NE1 utilized a live parrot on [CL’s] shoulder and swans as props. [2NE1 members] are friends who make great music but we hope in their next stages they won’t do so. Animals receive a lot of stress from the heat from lighting and from unfamiliar environments.”

They used the animals as an element of surprise, nothing else. And it worked. Ta-da, they got what they wanted and obviously the critics aren’t too happy about that. The animals were hardly injured during what little time they were on stage.

The swans were floating around lazily, for those of you who have never encountered swans in real life; that’s what they do!
And as for the parrot, and the “wing flapping”, CL was moving so of course it had to keep its balance by doing just that. It was trying to hold on, it was not a sign of nervousness.

True, they were not in their natural environment, but seriously, what about TV shows or films where they use animals as well?! Those are all also for entertainment purposes for humans as well – and a lot of the time the carers for those animals make sure that the animals are okay with it. They wouldn’t send CL out on stage with a crazy parrot.

I thought people are extremely nervous with the unexpectedly awesome stage of 2NE1, there’s none of boy group or girl group having that idea before. While 2ne1 used electric, R&B, the rest did sound boring, now 2NE1 is ten steps ahead, and they got too shock.

I look at it as an art. If they’re like this animals should not be in movies and Mv’s ,…. Haters really.

  6. mj1206's avatar

i don’t see why it has to be an issue. of course a sound mind would think that YG got all the necessary permission to use the animals. i don’t think they are naive or ignorant to use the animals just like that. some people just don’t think first before they talk.

    FFS!

Honestly, I would be worried if that parrot didn’t flap its wings. They could be accused of sedating it or binding its wings. Hey, that parrot was there for less than a minute! Also, these are all trained animals and their trainers are on the set, so that would rule out them being harmed. That magazine editor clearly doesn’t know what he/she was talking about.

On a lighter note (since I deem this issue unnecessary), I have a big feeling CL’s parrot will be used as a parody in gag shows. Lol

Wait, “CL’s parrot” just sounded wrong to me.

    ANYWAY,

My deepest condolences to Minzy and her family. I can’t even imagine myself in her shoes (also dealing with the comeback & tour) so we should all give her strength through words of support and prayers.

IMO YG is apologizing for using animals because of the ruckus going on… but not to the fact that he’s sorry for using them at first hand. YG told that they consult animal trainers… These people just have to get something to stir out of their bored life.

The parrot did looked rather nervous and I was worry that it might do something to CL as animals can go a little crazy when under stress with the music and light!

fuck u man what wrong with it i thouth i was really beautiful shit i love it alot the swan the bird is really cute and 2ne1 look amazing

  16. xara10's avatar

maybe because the whole thing was amazing since they couldn’t see any wrong on their performance; what they did they focused their attention to the use of animals just to make a fuss abt it. you know people, you cant please everybody …

I thought the parrot was a bit much and unnecessary, but YG wouldn’t do something like deal with live animals unless they’d consulted animal trainers and done everything the legal way. If the animal trainers said it was okay, then the birds weren’t suffering through any type of animal cruelty.

This is not the right time to criticize 2NE1.. Can you atleast let it pass for atleast 2 to 3 days.. The Maknae of the group is currently hurt because her Great-Aunt passed away and another issue like this would definitely hurt her more.. So please leave the girls alone OR better yet, keep your opinion to yourselves..

  19. momopi's avatar

before critisizing 2ne1 they should have check first how does the animals were approved to be used on stage in the first place.. for sure all the necessary documents was acquired from the authority in order to proceed with production. Vets most probably are on the set to make sure that everything in the set are animal friendly or made sure that the animals won’t be in too much stress… now i’m more excited to see their next stage.. YG will surely adjust..

  20. Boopie's avatar

Oh thats silly. The animals didn’t care let alone submit their complaints. I bet they were thrilled to be with 2ne1 as any blackjacks would be

  21. xara10's avatar

but in my opinion, i don’t see any harm about it, i think they just making it big though, sometimes you don’t know what their rules really when it comes to animals … i’m pretty sure that before they did the production, they already aware about the animal’s safety and most probably they ask some opinions about it. i just dont really understand some people making it a big issue, as if they did something cruel to the animals. i just hope they just appreciate the whole production and the performance. some people are just looking for something to make it an issue. for their personal interest.. aigoo.
