are you filipino? just a little trivia for those who can’t understand tagalog…
the proper tagalog term for Hello is “kamusta”, Welcome is “Maligayang Pagdating” and Mabuhay is “long life” but “Mabuhay” is like the proper “Hello”
I don’t know when that started… maybe because on Pageants the Philippine Representatives always use Mabuhay as an opener so foreign countries interpret it as Hello…waah!! It’s confusing right? lol just wanna let others know ^.^
Isn`t “kamusta” = “how are you”? Just need to further clarify that “proper”=formal. “Mabuhay” as a greeting in informal settings is not used. Like you said, it is used as a greeting by Filipinos usually to foreigners in a formal setting.
yeah it means how are you but it is the equivalent of hello as a greeting since hello does not have a direct translation.
so when you meet somebody, in english, you wouldn’t really right away say how are you rather you’d say hello first. but in filipino, it’s kumusta. but most of the time, we use hello as it is. 😀
