2NE1 STYLE EVOLUTION: FROM FRIENDLY TO FIERCE IN 15 STEPS

The 21st century begins on 12.12.11 when MTV Iggy crowns 2NE1 Best Band in the World at a concert in Times Square. But until then, let’s take a look back at the wigs, tattoos, Legos, and silver lame that took the CL, Bom, Minzy and Dara from goth to biker to space.

#15 \”DON\’T STOP THE MUSIC\” MUSIC VIDEO

Embracing the bright, primary colors of a LEGO world.

#14 LIVE CONCERT PERFORMANCE

Sport meets space in these sweat-track suit outfits for a live concert.

#13 PROMO IMAGE FOR THE FIRST FULL LENGTH ALBUM, TO ANYONE

Black leather, metal studs, and some very aggressive shoulder pads make an appearance.

#12 LOOKS FROM TO ANYONE

More black leather, more black eyeliner, and did we mention the shoulder pads?

#11 \”CAN\’T NOBODY\” MUSIC VIDEO

The last set of looks from super-stylish video shows the girls in friendly form…maybe to relieve people who got super scared by Minzy a few minutes earlier in an Adidas Originals x Jeremy Scott X-Ray Tracksuit customized with spikes. Yikes.

They look like adorable cartoon astronauts here…but for how long?

#10 \”CLAP YOUR HANDS\” MUSIC VIDEO

The second video for the To Anyone album showed the girls rocking fierce tribal tats and a jungle-military aesthetic.

#9 \”IT HURTS\” MUSIC VIDEO

Another hit off their first album, the ballad “It Hurts” depicts 2NE1 in rare somber form. The goth looks are notable for the feathers, precision use of black and white, and the wigs. Especially Dara’s crazy, enormous, waist-length tresses.

#8 JAPAN DEBUT PROMO

Simple, elegant, yet also darkly subversive. These looks for 2NE1’s Japanese debut promotion may be stripped down, but they still carry the 2NE1 hallmarks: leather, feathers, and studs.

#7 FIRST LIVE CONCERT (NOLZA) 2011

Nolza, which means “let’s play” in Korean was 2NE1’s first live concert and a smashing success. The girl’s style evolution continued however, with a street edginess creeping in..

#6 FIRST LIVE CONCERT (NOLZA) 2011

With chunky necklaces, graffiti, and brash pops of color…

#5 FIRST LIVE CONCERT (NOLZA) 2011

And hand signs that 2-N-E-1 added up to a street vibe that only enhanced their attitude.

#4 FIRST LIVE CONCERT (NOLZA) 2011

We don’t remember if this is when they first started sticking their tongues out, but we think Minzy inspired these Adidas x Jeremy Scott 3 Tongue Attitude Shoes.

#3 \”I AM THE BEST\” MUSIC VIDEO

Mirror, silver lame, metal…how do these girls get away with not looking like disco balls?

#2 \”UGLY\” MUSIC VIDEO

Studs, spikes, brash colors…and now with neon, glow-in-the-dark, and streamer/fringe elements, 2NE1 leads the urban/tribal zeitgeist.

#1 \”UGLY\” MUSIC VIDEO

The strange thing about these clothes? They looks great against a “Harlem” backdrop, but could also work on a motorbike, in space, with power saws, in a jungle…any of your typical 2NE1 environments. It doesn’t get fiercer than this, does it?

There are a few inconsistencies here. ^^ First, the photo for #8, Japan Promo. It’s not for Japan promo, but it’s for the YG Fam Concert photoshoot. Second, #10, Clap Your Hands Music Video. CYH wasn’t the second video to be released during To Anyone. It was actually the first video. After CYH was GA, and then CN. ^_^ And third, #7, Nolza 2011. It wasn’t the first time that the girls rocked that kind of outfit and “style evolution continued however, with a street edginess creeping in” because it didn’t “creep in” In fact, that style was 2ne1’s first style, for Fire Street Version MV. ^_^

You can probably tell that this is OC admin making this comment. Haha! ^_^
