2NE1’s K-Pop Hit ‘I Am the Best’ Gains Spins at U.S. Radio Stations
New York and Boston stations have adopted the Korean banger into their playlists.
2NE1‘s “I Am the Best” continues making impressions in America as it begins picking up spins on stateside radio.
In the week ending Oct. 19, the electronic/hip-hop hybrid single was played 24 times on WBMP New York and 14 times on WODS Boston. Both stations published accompanying articles on their respective websites about the band and “I Am the Best,” with WODS Boston telling readers to listen for the song on air.
The airplay comes just two weeks after “I Am the Best” earned its best sales week yet in America (6,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan) and topping Billboard’s World Digital Songs chart — a first for a Korean act other than PSY. “Best” is currently at No. 2 on the chart after selling 3,000 copies in the week ending Oct. 12. The single pushed another 3,000 the prior week.
“Best” originally began its upward climb after being used in a Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet laptop ad, doing what any good sync should do and helping its accompanying music grow past its ad-watching audience.
The radio play of a non-English song, other than PSY, is particularly exciting for K-pop fans not to mention general world music fans. It’s also a major win for 2NE1 given the quartet’s strong appeal in the United States: The group featured on will.i.am’s #willpower album, was Korea’s first female act to hold stadium shows in America and just last week member CL announced plans to push a solo career stateside with Scooter Braun.

2NE1’s “I AM THE BEST” Hits 100m Views on YouTube
[서울 연합뉴스 = 이은정 기자] 2NE1’s top hit song “I AM THE BEST” hit 100 million views on YouTube.
According to their agency YG Entertainment on Oct 6, the video hit 114.4 million views at 11:25 am.
The video was first unveiled on June 27, 2011, and has been garnering popularity ever since. The accomplishment came in just 3 years and 4 months.
Billboard, in celebration of 2NE1’s 5th anniversary, selected this music video as the top of Top 5 2NE1’s Videos You Must Watch last May.
Seo Hyun Seung, who directed BIGBANG’s “Fantastic Baby” that hit 100 million views already, directed the video.
2NE1 will continue on with their World Tour in Macau on Oct 17, and will move on to be part of YG Family Concert that will be held in Beijing and Taiwan on Oct 19 and 25 respectively.

2NE1’S “I AM THE BEST,” BGM OF MICROSOFT AD
[텐아시아 = 장서윤 기자] 2NE1 is arousing much attention as their song “I AM THE BEST” was chosen as the theme song of an ad created by one of world’s largest companies, America’s Microsoft.
The song will be used as the BGM of a tablet PC commercial video clip of Microsoft from August 11 (local date). Viewers will hear the music for the next 6 months on TV and on other media for one year when the commercial is played.
YG Entertainment responded, “Microsoft contacted us through their ad agency to say that they want to use the song as their BGM. The electronic and hiphop-influenced song was released in June 2011, and it crosses over to genres of reggae and African rhythm. At the time of release, it received high praises for expressing 2NE1’s colors well, and swept across music markets home and abroad.”
2NE1 unveiled their 2nd full album “CRUSH” this year, and their active promotion led them to be the first South Korean artists to enter Billboard 200 by ranking #61. They re-wrote the history of K-Pop. They also carried out their 2nd World Tour “ALL OR NOTHING.”
Awesome! I never thought they’d use a Kpop song for promotions, but so happy they used “I Am The Best” ^^ The song is quite appropriate, given they’re promoting their stuff. XD
